so i have a 1970 eska 5hp. it seems to be in ok condition, just the usual things need to be done to get it running properly. but while im at it i thought i would check compression while im at it. what should the compression be? its a 2 stroke. and its going to be the main engine for my 17' sailboat. any help?
thanks
neil

Re: eska overhaul

Most engines minimum compression is 100#.
It will run on less but may not develope full power.

Re: eska overhaul

ok so i checked the compression and with one pull i got a lil over 100, and with 5-6 pulls it gave me 135. i did this 3 times and i got the same each time. so the internals seems ok.
i started to check the foot and i must be a fool, because i have no manual but plan on getting one. i took off the skeg which had 4 screws and drained the gear case. the gears look good no sings of wear. i then tried to take off the "foot". i had a 1/2 hex head bolt in the rear which came off easy. in the front there is a sloted screwdriver bolt/ screw. and of course the metal is soft and the head is useless now. im going to try a craftsman screwout, its worked before. if this doesnt work what should i try? i have no access to heat/torch so could i drill it out? also when this screw comes off should the foot just come off? how or where does the drive shaft seperate? please help. this is my first outboard repair.

Re: eska overhaul

ok so i got it running for like 20 min. dialed in the carbs, and left it alone while i ate supper. went back to start it and nothing. would not start. my shoulder is sore and im tired of this motor. it ran well befor i "fixed" it. im wanting to sell it as myold clinton runs better. i have a new water pump, coil, condenser, points, and carb gaskets. i have 60$ in the motor and thats all i want for it. 60$. it has 135# compression. im sure it can be fixed by someone with more time and better shoulder than mine. email me at kenfyoozed387@yahoo.com

neil
