What would a reasonable estimate be to replace the U joints and a gimble bearing on a Volvo Penta Outdrive? Talking backyard mechanic not Marina. I realize that it varies by region and individual, but looking for ballpark numbers. Thanks.

Re: Estimate for Outdrive Work

If someone had the tools and you bought the parts? Maybe $100? For someone with the experience and tools, should be about a 2 hour job + or -...might as well have the bellows and seals replaced...I mean why someone is in there?

Bellows (exhaust and drive) $95~, gimbal bearing $95~, u-joint $35~

Mechanics in my area of SC charge $90 to $110 per hour. I agree that to do everything, plus install new bellows, its a 2.5 hour job. Plus parts...

I'd agree on those prices...however, he asked about and was specific about it being a "backyard" mechanic! I always figure about half of a full shop rate...I mean there's almost no overhead, or guarantee/insurance!

That's pricey...for that amount I'd go back to marine school and do it myself...or in my case, just do it myself!

It is my guess, but I am not sure if there is a prize or anything like that for coming closest to the actual. :D
