Unfortunately my 88 spl is now in need of a rebuild after countless hours. A shop quoted me a newly rebuilt 88 spl for $3,000 installed or a 2004 etec 75 for $3,400 installed. I like my old school engine but it would be nice to have a quieter more efficient engine. Anyone have thoughts? Also have the print sheet from the etec. Any suggestions appreciated!

I would rebuild the 88HP crossflow.--Properly done will run another 20 years.---The E-tec will save money on fuel / oil I agree.---But look up the availability of parts / price of E-tec parts.----Also is there dealer support for the E-tec in the future?---

first thing to do is check in with the folks at the ETEC owners board and submit your question for ETEC experts to comment. Board has an excellent search engine

your 2004 is 22 years old with very little use if the EMM is the original one that came with the engine. ( likely is but...just saying)

you have no active codes which is good ! several events took place around 356 but could have been maintenance related but all seems fine now so a good test run is needed in case some gremlins pop up. Ask seller if a run is possible and warranted !

You have 1 code 38 no oil which is strange because I3 engine from those years like mine had a notorious oil pump & SW bug later fixed by BRP. Code38 was just a sw...pump bug causing theEMM to NOT SENSE oil burps from the oil sensor. BTW verify oil tank... the early ones like 2004-2005-6 developped airline craks needing full repalcement .. by BRP which no longer exits but parts are available !!

A software upgrade and oil pump was needed ... like mine.. years ago !

ask dealer if the engine SW MAP is the latest and CODE 38 sw upgrade/oil pump was done. and if he can upgrade (free) if not. The software revision wil tell him.

I3 engines are known to be great engines ... like mine. other than my BRP code 38 fix and a T&T reseal ... all has been happiness. (3 impellers easy to do yourself) I clipped the keel but fixed it with JB weld

ETEC are complex machine and do not tolerate bad fuel ! Te EMM is multi sensored but can not see bad crudded filters in the low pressure lift pump, VST HPP base filter, injector filters, mecanical bugs ( high pressure fuel pump, etc... THe VST hasa tiny tiny filter on thehigh pressure retun which is not shown in early books!! it can catch crumbling hose bits and cause problem so it needs a check. 2004 "may" have mushy fuel hoses...something to consider VST hose bard DELICATE if snapped =_ $$$$... ifyou service it warn the hose pull straight out never sideways !! use Oieteker clamps !

If it is not electrical or temperature related the EMM won't tell you so care and proper maintenace is the owner's job! ex: GC oil, flushing, waxing .. check lower clamshells for brohen bolts ( 7 bolts hold it together)

download the 2007 manual which pretty much covers the 2004. There is another file that covers FICHT and ETEC. Do some read-up

servicing in the future is deminishing but.... you can do a lot yourself (lots of videos) and parts are available. The early injector type is now harder to get !!! Somethng to consider.
You should consider getting the EV diagnostic software if you plan doservicing and know what is affecting the EMM/engine performance.
fyi..

Scary .. yes and no .....mine (75hp 2005) has been wonderfull I3 have a great reputation. Fresh water engine are always better but this one has low hrs.

Any thoughts about boat performance changes? I would expect less speed and hole shot compared to what I’m used to, but I don’t know how significant it would really be

no expert on boat performance but 75hp ETEC known to be 10% underrated so you would have about 82-83hp to push your rig... not much difference big big savings of $5G fuel low oil consumption NO SMELLY OIL using xd100 great torque ... consumes .6L/hr trolling and the early ones actually inject some xd-100 oil in theincoming fuel to protect the high pressure pump and injectors :) btw the engine EMM will SELF winterize see manual. Great if you need to store and winterize 6 months like me . I always store FULLY fueled with EV "2+4 D" fuel saver cycled in before storage.

looks nice but does not change engine performance :) why ??? who knows...

engine shows general lack of care .. heavy salt deposits externally owner propably never did flushes inside and outside the engine ...proceed with caution is what I would do. it may be a gem or a rock

Yeah...I own E-tec's too so I'm a fan.

Looks like a pontoon boat motor? Might explain all the idling hrs. Be nice to know more history but if it's ok you will love that motor.

Btw, BRP is still around just not making the outboard...their also still making parts and warranty for the g2, but they are slowing down. Service people are telling lies but it is getting tough to find shops so you will need to become an E-tec mechanic. They go for less around my neck of the woods.

Once you own a good one, you won't want anything else.

Thanks for all the input. I haven’t put eyes on the engines yet, they’re about 2 hours away from me so I may go see them tomorrow and report back further. I like the idea of the etec and maybe overhaul the 88 myself. But still un decided.
The current 88 spl falls on its face launching, and lacks about 900 rpm top end. The whole fuel system is rebuilt or replaced from the gas tanks to the reed valves. New head gaskets, water pump, thermostat, coils, power pack, stator. I noted the left lower cylinder has a good scratch that’ll catch a fingernail but all cylinders holding about 119 psi. Only thing I can figure is that the damaged cylinder is a piston problem that I can’t see.

Every V-4 / V-6 crossflow will die from broken piston rings.----Just a fact.----Great motor if you install 4 new WISECO style O/S pistons.

Stay with the 88. Simple easy to work on Engine, that isn't dependent on Impossible to Troubleshoot Electronics, on a Engine that is an Orphan.
I guess both are Orphans, but Parts will be available for the 88 for far longer...
