first thing to do is check in with the folks at the ETEC owners board and submit your question for ETEC experts to comment. Board has an excellent search engine
your 2004 is 22 years old with very little use if the EMM is the original one that came with the engine. (
likely is but...just saying)
you have no active codes which is good ! several events took place around 356 but could have been maintenance related but all seems fine now
so a good test run is needed in case some gremlins pop up. Ask seller if a run is possible and warranted !
You have 1 code 38 no oil which is strange because I3 engine from those years like mine had a notorious oil pump & SW bug later fixed by BRP. Code38 was just a sw...pump bug causing theEMM to NOT SENSE oil burps from the oil sensor.
BTW verify oil tank... the early ones like 2004-2005-6 developped airline craks needing full repalcement .. by BRP which no longer exits but parts are available !!
A software upgrade and oil pump was needed ... like mine.. years ago !
ask dealer if the engine SW MAP is the latest and CODE 38 sw upgrade/oil pump was done. and if he can upgrade (free) if not. The software revision wil tell him.
I3 engines are known to be great engines ... like mine. other than my BRP code 38 fix and a T&T reseal ... all has been happiness. (3 impellers easy to do yourself) I clipped the keel but fixed it with JB weld
ETEC are complex machine and do not tolerate bad fuel ! Te EMM is multi sensored but can not see bad crudded filters in the low pressure lift pump, VST HPP base filter, injector filters, mecanical bugs ( high pressure fuel pump, etc... THe VST hasa tiny tiny filter on thehigh pressure retun which is not shown in early books!! it can catch crumbling hose bits and cause problem so it needs a check. 2004 "may" have mushy fuel hoses...something to consider VST hose bard DELICATE if snapped =_ $$$$... ifyou service it warn the hose pull straight out never sideways !! use Oieteker clamps !
If it is not electrical or temperature related the EMM won't tell you so care and proper maintenace is the owner's job! ex: GC oil, flushing, waxing .. check lower clamshells for brohen bolts ( 7 bolts hold it together)
download the 2007 manual which pretty much covers the 2004. There is another file that covers FICHT and ETEC. Do some read-up
servicing in the future is deminishing but.... you can do a lot yourself (lots of videos) and parts are available. The
early injector type is now harder to get !!! Somethng to consider.
You should consider getting the EV diagnostic software if you plan doservicing and know what is affecting the EMM/engine performance.
