Local machine shop said they fill the bare block water system with gas to check for leaks, they said gas will immediately seep through a crack and show you where the leak is.

I am assuming you mean gas as in propane, etc. that they can detect with some kind of instrument?

tell them to use rubbing alcohol- It won't blow; but will seep fast.

they set block upright filled water passages all the way to deck with gasoline and it came out nowhere, they are telling me the block is not cracked, it has no visible cracks

A very reliable way is to check it before you take it apart using an air compressor.

You pump it up to 15-20 psi and use a squirt bottle with soapy water to spray it with.

bubbles indicate a leak.

Methinks that would be difficult on a bare block sitting on the bench.

This is brilliant! Talk about a great 4th of July pyrotechnic!! But serially, I'm sure this is perfectly safe. Just let me know where I can watch (from a distance).
