So far so good. You are learning and that is important. Remember though that when in Rome do as the Romans do. I understand your posts, but you also have to remember that at not quite, but close to 50 I am still young and happening. ROFLMAO

I have a shift rod connector you can have if you break yours. I am not 100% sure it is the same but, it is off a 1950's model johnson ( mid-something or the other) that was either 25or 35 hp....it was a long time ago...anyhoo, it is yours if you need it and can use it. It is one inch long and 1/4 inch id where the rod goes/and looks to take 1/4 diameter fine thread bolts. I would be tempted to turn the connector where you can get to the side and gently<gently> insert a flat tipped screwdriver in the long split section( it is in the same direction as the shift rod-up and down-not sideways) and gently pry it apart-just a little-while at the same time pushing down on the lower unit-it should slip off. I can post a pic of what I have if you would like to see it. ;)

sounds like your on the home stretch! If they don't have the drain plug washers at napa don't sweat it. The dealer with the carb kit will have lots of them. should be about 50 cents apiece. Good luck and keep at it!

there are two kits. One with the float and one without. Sounds like they ordered the wrong one.

You mean gear shaft or the prop shaft?

If you had fishing line on the prop shaft check the gear case for leaks (or just check the gear case oil after your first run in water for signs of water in your oil. Oftentimes the fishing line can cause leaks because it will cut through the seals.

That kit should have a float in it. Don't let them tell you otherwise. It must have been shorted at the factory. I doubt it will come "later" unless they special ordered it once they saw it was missing. That kit is used on several motors from the early 1950's into the 1990's. Nothing special about it.

Well, remember your carburator has two butterflies the one near where it bolts to the engine is the throttle butterfly. You should be able to reconnect the linkage to the carb after you reinstall it with the butterfly closed provided that you have the throttle handle in the closed position. Iow the mag plate is rotated all the way clockwise. The butterfly near the throat of the carburator or near the intake air silencer is your choke butterfly. It should be wide open provided you do not have the choke on. If you try to install the throttle linkage with the choke on it could very well interfere. good luck! And remember the faq post regarding carburator overhauling. Everything you need to know is in there.

There is also this article at duckworks magazine.
