It just means I don't think you damaged anything inside the lower unit.

"ok ill look at the shift rod probably this weekend any tips on how to make sure its on there good?"

Well, just remove the cover with the two screws on the side of the leg. Remove both bolts from the connector inside there. And look in the bolt holes with a flashlight and see it both of the rods are all the way in so that the bolts have to go through the grooves in the rods. Remember all the trouble you had getting the shift rod connector apart? Well unless you got in there with a rat-tail file and cleaned things up a bit, you should have had almost as much trouble getting it back together again. If you didn't that tells me it probably didn't go together all the way. At least I hope that's where the problem is  .

At like $0.50 apiece, its fairly cheap insurance to make sure you don't have a leak into the lu due to a faulty vent screw/drain screw washer. Its not like you change out the lu oil every week, after all.

You're right of course. I guess I'm just in an argumentative mood this week. Pay no attention to me :) .

well please dont make fun of my ignorance but i remember checking it whne i connected it all and putting it in foward the thing slipped out but i put it back in reverse and it went back in and i shifted to foward again and it stayed though but probably not all the way if i think about it now. man idiot me for my ignorance that couldve stopped me from getting in the accident...

ya ill look at it but ill attack the connector to the top one first cause i think ill will be easier or should i do it to the bottom first? but ya ill make sure its tight now and i think that wb40 was still on there nice and good which is y it slipped out...

Actually, I agree with you Sea18Horse. They call it a crush washer, but you'd have to be Hercules to actually crush it. Maybe the old fibre seals shouldn't be reused, but I see no real need to change the new plastic replacement washers everytime. Of course, that's just me and I still recommend that everyone change them everytime. Do as I say not as I do - right? :)

Would never make fun of anyone on here. Well at least not much! :)

I would say the top one first. Just because usually when one takes it apart you just remove the lower bolt and leave the upper one alone. But I don't think it really matters. Whichever one makes it easiest.

Hmmmm, 59 Evinrude, did they even have thermostats yet? I don't know when they got them. Does it have the triangular cover on top of the head with three screws? Anyway flick some water on it first if your nervous and see if it sizzles off. If it doesn't then it would be safe to touch it. Of course this will only tell you if it's stuck closed. It won't tell you if it's stuck open and therefor running too cool. If you don't know when it was last changed then it would be a good idea to replace it.

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

ya im still in the middle of adjusting it. but when i idled the motor in the water when it was fully warmed up( idled for like 15-20 minutes. i took a hand ful of water poured it ovr the powerhead and it didnt steam off which means its cooling good. but i mea i can get my hand close to it and isnt really hot. so this means its cooling. ok while my motor is off the motor im going to take the thermostat off and check it and how do i know its still working properly and do they stilll sell these?

Well in your case since it's not overheating just look at it to make sure it's not stuck open. Normally you would want to heat it up in a pan of water with a thermometer and see at what temperature it begins to open. I believe you're looking for 143F on that one but I could be wrong.

They do still sell them. The Sierra catalog shows thermostat kit # 18-3672. That breaks down to thermostat omc #434841 and gasket omc #310058. See if those match up with the numbers in your parts manual. If they don't then you should probably stick with getting them from an Evinrude dealer.

Good luck getting those screws out. Patients! And lots of PB Blaster! Do you have an impact driver? Really helpful with these old rusted screws.

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

ok i adjusted the shift rod and im sure its fine now. ya i pulled the t stat i didnt wanna check im just going to replace it. the t stat weirdly smelled a faint smell of oil ( i must need a new headgasket). anyways whats the part number for a new t stat cause i need one and does it come with ned gaskets mine r kinda old lol...

anyways i went to try to test and make sure my motor was shifting from neutral to forward to reverse etc and i got the gas tank. hooked it up and started to prime it. then it started leaking fuel. well i think i need new o rings there. i have 2 " o" rings which were tied to the fuel and air lines there. there both different though cause ones more hard plastic like and smaller then the other one and the other one is bigger by a little and squishy rubber type material. i dont know how to change the o rings though. how do u change them?

The O rings for the double line hoses should be the same size and are easy to change. Search on this site for the method to do it.

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

The search term you specified (o) is under the minimum word length (2) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer.
If this term contains a wildcard, please make this term more specific.

this pops up whenever try to search something
