It just means I don't think you damaged anything inside the lower unit.
Well, just remove the cover with the two screws on the side of the leg. Remove both bolts from the connector inside there. And look in the bolt holes with a flashlight and see it both of the rods are all the way in so that the bolts have to go through the grooves in the rods. Remember all the trouble you had getting the shift rod connector apart? Well unless you got in there with a rat-tail file and cleaned things up a bit, you should have had almost as much trouble getting it back together again. If you didn't that tells me it probably didn't go together all the way. At least I hope that's where the problem is
