It looks purple to me!

Good luck CoolKid! I am impressed with the progress you have made, and your willingness to learn and stick with a project until it is complete. That is admirable, for sure.

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

Hey, after looking at this, I just realized my parts motor is a golden jubilee! Now I have to put it back in service.

I also just realized looking at the pictures of it that the lower unit doesn't match and looks like it is a poorly repainted Johnson lower unit. I will have to pull some part numbers off it and see if I can figure what year that lower unit is from.

The motor is out at the cottage, but I think getting it up and running would be easy. The problem is that I took some parts of this lower unit and some parts off my '59 Johnson lower unit to make one good one.

That is one pretty motor in the picture, though.

how about painting the body of the motor blue like the original color then the cowl would be purple darkish to blend in wiht the blue and write evinrude in white or gold? or thinking about dark red?

That sounds like it would look nice.
All kidding aside, It is your motor. It all comes down to what appeals to you. None of us expects you to like the same things we like or vice-versa. We do however reserve the right to give you a hard time about it later :) .

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

ok well i got a problem guys and i really need help. before my rope broke and i had to wrap some rope around the flywheel to start. well what happened was that some rope got caught around the flywheel and some on mag plate nothing was damaged except one thing and that was a connector where u connect the remote control wire to. well theres this plastic like thing in the connector that turns a shaft that in turns the mag plate to advance the spark. sorry not sure how to explain. well i tried takeing that plate thing out by hammering a screw driver threw it. well it kept hitting the metal connector didnt realize it. but theres this little metal stick thats attached to it and it broke. i tired this stuff the homedepot recommened which was and item called fast steel. but i believe the connector is alumium? but the item doesnt work i tired it like 3-4 times. its in a tube and its fill with this putty and u knit it all together and place then clamp. ok well its not working. what am i going to do?

do they still make throttle asembly's which i can pleace that part. not sure if u can understand what im saying though

oh ya the thning moves out of place when i advance the throttle so theres quite a bit of pressure on it so i mean should i try gorrilla glue and see if that works?

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

Hmmmm. I'm not familiar with how the throttle and advance mechanism on the Evinrudes works. But maybe something like JB weld might be better. Sometimes the putty stuff doesn't have a lot of sticking power even though it's very strong on it's own if it has a lot of surface area to stick to. I'm afraid scrounging up a used part might be the best option.

Bummer though :( .

idk ill go to napa and see if i can find anything in the book

Hmmmmm, Have you done a compression test on this yet? I don't remember. Sounds like it might be time. :(

Also, reviewing what you said about the part that broke. If you look at shop.evinrude.com
and scroll down to "1968" at the listing for the 18 horse motors (the 10s were discontinued and the 9.5s are a completely different animal) and look at the first motor in the list. Look at the "power head group" and tell us if your motor is like this with the vertical throttle shaft and all. (item #34 "LEVER, control"). And item #33 "PIN, control lever" is this what you were trying to drive out? And can you point out which part is broken? The rest of the throttle gears and stuff is in "lower unit group"

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

ok well i looked at the year 1968 a 18hp motor and i chose the very first model and in the lower unit group i saw my item. it was number #83 labeled as gear, throttle control and the picture was very clear but i could tell it was my item but its lik 60$$ but it just might be 60$ from me using my boat or not. but not sure if u can see the item very well but the thing sits in the bushing #82 and theres this little metal peice coming out of it of # 83 on the bottom which goes into the bushing and rotates to turn a shaft to advance the magneto and so on. how do i buy this item from evinrude.

can i just go to the dealer cause that would be very much helpful

Yeah, I suspected that was the case. It's too bad you don't have a marine salvage place nearby. I had to get one of those for my 18. The guy at my local outboard salvage place had a whole bin full of them. I got one for $5.00. You might contact these guys cheap old boats or http://tcoutboard.com/ (952)-496-1951. The part# is 0304931 It's the same one that my 57 uses. Should be the same as yours.

"oh ya i did a compression test before if u look way long time ago. like i got 70-75 psi in the top piston this was before my decarb but i didnt have enough room to check the bottom piston but i feel im going to do another decarb."

That's right I remember now. Well it might be time to figure out how to gain access to the lower one. So you can see what it is. Another decarb can't hurt.

"oh y noticed that my carb was condesning around it and the reed plate cover too"

Is there moisture (water) condensing around it? Or is it a sheen of oil. On my 18 horse there is a sheen of oil all around the carburetor and under the mag plate. It has a ton of hours on it and I think the upper crankshaft seal leaks quite a bit. My 10 horse has a lot fewer hours I think and it's all nice and dry and clean. If it's water condensing then maybe the fuel is evaporating very slowly and the humidity where you live is high enough to make the water condense out.

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

ya there was water condensing around it no oil and i smelled it no trace but what happened is that it was around it and i thinik it was the pressure in it plus its was like 80 something that day and i do live in flroida u knwo so it probably was humid.

ill try to stop by auto zone and see if i can find a compression tester that is small enogu for me to fit there and that has a 10mm socket for my atv.

as for the part i need well could u get me a pic of the item im need for reference..

and i think ill call the place and see if they will take money order and heply evyrthing will go alright

Re: evinrude 10hp qd-23

well this stinks i called the dealer and the item is about 90 bucks to replace and i need a credit card number to even hold the item and so i will probably call that outboard salvage place and see better then spending 90 dollars to a crappy dealer lol jk but the guy i talked to before didnt ask for a credit card number to hold and i asked to talk to him and he doesnt work there anymore =(
