Evinrude 140 Looper Thrust bearings?

This morning the flywheel began dragging against the timer base and flipping the timing all over the place. I found that the crank will lift up and down about 1/3". I remember once on a different model I had the opposite problem and found the roller bearing pressed on the top of the crankcase had somehow been jammed which cause the crank to be very hard to rotate until I fixed the bearing.

Is my engine toast or is it something as simple as replacing the upper bearing?

looking at the manuals I'm thinking if anything, the lower bearing may be the problem

Am I able to replace the lower bearing without splitting the case? Looks like the bearing is pressed on, not sure how to get a tool on it to pull it off, and reinstall. I haven't pulled the power head yet but I see with the intake off that the crank is riding on the crankcase now because it's sitting so low.

If you had that much movement you need to do a full inspection of internals.----Take the block apart .----Look at rods , bearings , crankshaft seal rings ( 6 of them ) and block sealing surfaces.----Perhaps lower bearing housing came loose.-----Perhaps all the 1/4" bolt holes in the block are damaged too.

I'm trying to just get a few more weeks out of this engine, then looking for a newer one, possible 4 stroke. I don't really have the time or tooling to take the whole case apart, but if I pull the powerhead I'm seeing if the lower bearing is replaceable without splitting the case. I guess I'll just pull the powerhead anyway and see what's going on.

Ok, well I pulled the powerhead on my lunchbreak today, and all the lower bearing plate bolts were off, they were laying in a big pile under the powerhead. Once I put them back in and set the block back in position with no weight on the flywheel/hoist, the crank sits centered where it should be. No more scraping the case at all.

What is the recommended torque etc for these bolts? I don't know why they all fell out. I was planning on cleaning all the threads to get the oil etc off them, and using red Loctite.
