This morning the flywheel began dragging against the timer base and flipping the timing all over the place. I found that the crank will lift up and down about 1/3". I remember once on a different model I had the opposite problem and found the roller bearing pressed on the top of the crankcase had somehow been jammed which cause the crank to be very hard to rotate until I fixed the bearing.
Is my engine toast or is it something as simple as replacing the upper bearing?
