Ok here we go again
The engine was running very nice, plenty of power nice idle, picking up very good but no more than 5700 revs.
ok so the WOT revs are a bit low for a 13.5x 15inch pitch prop on a 13ft boat, but i could live with that for now.
maybe its got a limiter for 5700 ?
Then the other day i take it out and after about 1 hour running at various throttle speeds it started to run very
rough and surging from anything under 3000 rpm.
water temp the same 60 to 65 degree's as always, plenty of fresh fuel still in tank, tank vent definitely open and
squeezing the fuel bulb made no difference at all.
the engine ran like this for a while then would surge and go ok once over 3,000 rpms so i put it down to dirt in
the carbs on the low running side and gave up for the day.
So i come home and next day take off the carbs, strip all 3 right down and look for dirt, any little spec of dirt,
no trace of any dirt at all and still i put 120 psi airline through everything to make double sure its clean as a whistle.
checked float levels ofcourse while it was all apart and all ok,no signs of any leaks or bad gaskets etc.
checked compression with cold engine but throttle wide open and the results are
top 153, middle 148, and bottom 152 so compression seems fine.
Ive checked spark gap on plugs and yes they are all good with nice tan colour on the centre ceramic.
spark seems to be jumping good as well but now the engine dont even want to run at an idle speed !!!!!!!!
its like the timing has gone way out, yet nothing on the engine had been touched since it was running right.
i do think the temp has gone up around 5 degrees more than it was a couple of months back but the river temp has
also risen a lot due to the sudden heatwave we are getting here in the uk at the moment (it wont last ).
Now again today ive checked the plugs and the compression and the spark, but this realy isnt doing much good.
once i manage to get it to run over 3,000 rpm it shoots to max real quick as if nothing is wrong.
now im pretty sure its not dirt in the carbs, i checked them out real good and also have a spare set ready to be
switched over as i cleaned then the same time as well just to make sure they are always ready if needed.
its like the timing is totaly wrong, yet nothing has been changed on the settings.
the fast idle works for the normal time then when that cuts out the engine dies unless i manualy rev it up and
keep it over 1200 rpm.
before this problem happened the engine would run lovely at 700 in gear and about 800 in nutral.
i have ran the boat down the river for 1/2 mile at 7 to 800 rpm before with no problems at all.
i am not scared of anything mechanical, but electrics are not my thing, and im wondering if it could be electrical ???
any help or advice or any ideas at all will be greatly recieved.
im obviously doing something very very wrong
