Hello all
Newbie to the forums here, I would never have guessed such a forums existed!!
Anyways I have not run my outboard for three years. It is a 1978? 55hp 2 cylinder Evindue that I bought rebuilt. I have run it for a couple seasons before storing it. I may have gotten sloppy on winterizing it( got married, bought a house etc...)
When I got ready to use it again I got new fuel and blew residue oil out of cylinders before I tried to start it. Engine seemed to idle ok and throttle up on muffs. I put boat in water this weekend and it seems ok at idle and at partial throttle(~1500rpm). Then I went to throttle up it would only go to ~3000 rpms. Seem to run smoothly and did not overheat so I ran it for a while, about an hour total, at varying speeds seeing if it would clear up. Now I'm reading these forums and it sounds like it may have been running on one cylinder. I guess I'm trying to figure out if this sounds correct to others and I'm wondering if I could of hurt thr engine by running it this way for the hour it was run?
Thanks in advance
Brian Kelley

If it were running on one cylinder the engine would shake and run rough. The long period of storage without preparation has probably gummed up the carburetors which will need to be removed, disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, all passages blown out with compressed air and new kits installed. But before you do that, make sure both cylinders have good spark.

It ran pretty smooth. I was hoping it would clear on it's own as I'm not too confident in my carb rebuilding skills. I'm assuming I should check spark and compression also. Any ideas if there is anything else I can do before attacking the carbs?
Would you guess I probably didn't hurt the motor by running it that way??
Thanks

Do a compression test and that should tell you more. Very easy to do. I would also buy a manual, either an original OMC or an aftermarket such as Seloc.

I agree with the compression check. I had the same engine, same symptom. Bad design on the connecting rod bearings. They are in a squirrel cage. Cage breaks down, shatters and gets into cylinder and makes a mess. Replacement bearing have no cage, just a pair of endplate washers, and more rollers.

Couple years ago had a 1980 Evinrude go out on me (Main bearing broke). While I was in there, I did a micorscopic look at all the squirrel cages, and 4 of 6 had fine cracks. Replaed them all.

I got the Clymer manual and it seems to be the most confusing thing I've read lately! I've got to get offline again but thanks for the help.
Bill, Do you think you could have seen the damage thru the spark plug hole? was the cyl wall or piston head scarred up? I can't get a compression tester right away but now I'm more curious than ever to see if I screwed up something.
Thanks again!!

Brian

Hello All
In case anyone cares or has the same symtoms...
It was indeed sludge in the carbs. The worst was the top carb. The carg design has the high speed orifice at the bottom of the bowl and that's what was gummed up.
I found a Seloc manual and it was quite helpful for the rebuild of the carbs!

Happy boating and thanks to everyone for tips thuoghts and continuing to make this a grat forum!!!
Brian Kelley
