Re: Evinrude 5hp no water from telltale

What confuses me is why would I consistently get a reading of 120 with a compression test and have a bad head gasket at the same time? Anyway, took the boat on the lake yesterday. It took about 30 seconds but water began pumping going in forward gear. Stayed steady for the most part for 10 minutes straight, until I slowed down to a crawl speed and flipped her into neutral, then the flow from the telltale stopped. I've given up on this motor and gave it back to my buddy. I did all I could with this. Nice set up you have there Vic!

My motor had great compression even with the blown head gasket. How I fugured it out was I was putting compressed air through the water intake and my dad noticed the flywheel turning back and forth lol. Its very easy to change and cheap too I would tell your buddy you have one more quick idea.

Probably end up doing that but here's a tidbit that Evinrude emailed me today. They said to drill a hole in the pump housing, just below the rubber grommett. This will prevent the pump from getting "air locked".

When I do the head gasket, do I put sealant on both sides of the new gasket, or do I not use sealant?

Well folks, looks like we have this problem finally licked. Evinrude told me to drill a hole in the pump housing, just below the grommet. Did that, reassembled, put her in the barrel and got an immediate nice cool water flow, even in neutral and reverse. Apparently the issue was some sort of crazy airlock situation going on in the pump. Ran for 5 minutes and still a good cool flow in all gears. Thanks again everyone for not giving up on me!

geez, i assumed that all the omc pump housings had the vent hole from the factory. very common problem when the vent hole is plugged with crud.
