Evinrude 6HP, Model 6302s, Making sure I set the points right.

Hopefully just a quick question. I had to rebuild the carb, re-cut the spark plug wires to the coils as they were corroded, and put in new points and condensers. I want to make sure I set the points right. I placed a red mark in the picture where the points arm touches the cam.

I see the "top" on the cam marked. Do I set the points open at anywhere within that "top" mark, or do I start as it turns CW to just the beginning of the "Top".

What about throttle position on the arm...leave that to "Stop" (off).

Do I care where the timing marks are on the lower fixed piece?

Can I just put the shaft nut on and turn the cam 180 degrees to set the other points.

I have done some reading on the site and from what it looks like, it is just rotate the shaft to the "top" position, set one set of points, then rotate the shaft via either the nut or putting the flywheel back on, then set the other.

Thanks,

The word "TOP" is telling you that's the top of the cam.... don't install it upside down. Set the points as follows.

(Point Setting Of Magneto Models)
(J. Reeves)

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubbing portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not. Should there be any question of the points being dirty (touching the contact with your finger would cause them to be dirty), clean them with a small brush and acetone or lacquer thinner.

NOTE 1: Should the operating cam have a small portion on it with the word "SET" imprinted, align this portion with the fiber rubbing portion instead of the flywheel key.

NOTE 2: Should the cam have the word TOP imbossed on the top of it, that is a cam that could be installed upside down and this is simply telling you which side is up. It is not a position where one would set the points.
