I had 50 HP Evinrude (1971 50 HP Evinrude model 50173 S, serial number E16936) with Johnson Hydro-Electric Drive controls with electric shifter and choke.
I have purchased on eBay 1983 70 HP Evinrude E70ELCTE. Seller was kind to include set of old controls that are compatible with the 70 HP engine and an electrical harness, however there is no ignition switch nor is there a choke switch on that ?new? control.
I do realize that old controls with yellow plug are not compatible with this new engine and its red plug, but I am hoping to reuse ignition switch and choke from the old controls. Considering that the new 70 HO engine does have power trim & tilt and there is no power T & T switch on either set of controls, I am thinking I can just get by with single pull double throw type of electrical switch to raise or lower the engine.
I did order a service manual for the new engine and I do hope that there will be wiring diagrams that will help me piece all of this together. However, considering that media mail takes a bit, I am afraid that I will run out of time to test this engine before warranty expires.
I am hoping that on this forum I can get some guidance as to how to proceed. I think I have read most of the postings hoping to find something that would give me some insight however nothing I have seen matches up with what I am seeing on this new engine.
Out of the T & T there are 5 wires coming out (Blue, Red, White, Green and Black). Any ideas what do they represent?
Out of the ?new? electrical harness with the red plug, on the other end there are 8 wires coming out (Solid Purple, Yellow with Red stripe, Black, Red, Purple with White stripe, Black with Yellow stripe, Tan and Gray). I would really appreciate if I could get any pointers on these.
I noted in some of the postings that there are mentions of solenoids and relays ? are any of those normally incorporated into the harness / controls or do they all reside within the engine?
Seller indicated that the engine model was 1983 E70ELCTE, however that does not match what I can see on the plate. I can not quite make out the model number, but it goes like this J 60 ?? CC R (J60SLCCR) maybe. Serial number is quite legible and it reads G 77 96 150.
I would really appreciate if anyone could give me some pointers to any of my questions, I just want to get as much of a head start I can in order to finish everything and put this engine through the test before warranty expires.
Thanks,
Milo Knezevic
