Evinrude 70 HP wiring from scratch

I had 50 HP Evinrude (1971 50 HP Evinrude model 50173 S, serial number E16936) with Johnson Hydro-Electric Drive controls with electric shifter and choke.
I have purchased on eBay 1983 70 HP Evinrude E70ELCTE. Seller was kind to include set of old controls that are compatible with the 70 HP engine and an electrical harness, however there is no ignition switch nor is there a choke switch on that ?new? control.

I do realize that old controls with yellow plug are not compatible with this new engine and its red plug, but I am hoping to reuse ignition switch and choke from the old controls. Considering that the new 70 HO engine does have power trim & tilt and there is no power T & T switch on either set of controls, I am thinking I can just get by with single pull double throw type of electrical switch to raise or lower the engine.

I did order a service manual for the new engine and I do hope that there will be wiring diagrams that will help me piece all of this together. However, considering that media mail takes a bit, I am afraid that I will run out of time to test this engine before warranty expires.

I am hoping that on this forum I can get some guidance as to how to proceed. I think I have read most of the postings hoping to find something that would give me some insight however nothing I have seen matches up with what I am seeing on this new engine.

Out of the T & T there are 5 wires coming out (Blue, Red, White, Green and Black). Any ideas what do they represent?

Out of the ?new? electrical harness with the red plug, on the other end there are 8 wires coming out (Solid Purple, Yellow with Red stripe, Black, Red, Purple with White stripe, Black with Yellow stripe, Tan and Gray). I would really appreciate if I could get any pointers on these.

I noted in some of the postings that there are mentions of solenoids and relays ? are any of those normally incorporated into the harness / controls or do they all reside within the engine?

Seller indicated that the engine model was 1983 E70ELCTE, however that does not match what I can see on the plate. I can not quite make out the model number, but it goes like this J 60 ?? CC R (J60SLCCR) maybe. Serial number is quite legible and it reads G 77 96 150.

I would really appreciate if anyone could give me some pointers to any of my questions, I just want to get as much of a head start I can in order to finish everything and put this engine through the test before warranty expires.

Thanks,
Milo Knezevic

Let's see if I can get you started anyway
INTRODUCES
0123456789

the word corrosponds with a number, for years your eng falls they used this system for identification of models and its yr.A 88 yr would have "cc"the c corrosponds to 8.In case of the 83 you have "ct"It seems like you ended up with a 60 hp not 70 and the yr 88?you can probably find more on the model #'s elsewhere.I would say its an 88 also because the 83 TNT would have had a different set up.Your eng has a TNT box mounted in the cowling, red is positive+ black neg- blue (sky)up green(grass)down, the others I believe are for a TNT sending unit that has a guage to give angle of eng indication(they break)yes you can use a toggle switch mounted? for your TNT,you can purchase a tnt harness that plugs into the plugs off the tnt relay box in the engine,or run a positive from anywhere, but best from the accy.(purple wire at key switch)to the common on your toggle(momentary on/off/momentary on)switch(get a good one)connect the blue wire via your own wiring to the terminal on the toggle that gives you up,ang green to the other.run them to the corrosponding color wire in the relay box, there are screws on terminals in there, you can remove the supplied pig tail connector if you run you own wires, you may need to run a ground to the box,but it should have one already connecte to the engine block perhaps behind the relay box using a mounting bolt(worry about it if you get no response)
The red on the main harness is +power to key switch,blk-,blk with /yel is the kill circut, purple /whi is choke tan is your heat horn sender wire, grey the tach sender solid purple is you run,or the assy.everthing yu want to operate via the on side of the key hooks there, like tach power, heat horn power,
As for the corrosponding letters on the terminals of the keyswitch they hook to,I dont remember off hand,Im not home so I dont have my books. But surely,if you search this forum for keyswitch wireing ,you should find it,seems like you have the correct engine harness, you can mount it in a control box or on dash, but your old elec shift box cant help you,you need 2 cables 1 for shift 1 throttle,as mentioned, you can probably find a omc control box on ebay with a harness hooked to it already perhaps the cables too,be sure its in good shape as you may need to put cables of correct length in it,heat horn would be mounted in the control box,on your harness there may be clips supplied for it,tan and purple are the main two .You can also get a single mount shifter box used just for your shifting mount your key on dash, you have a few options to think about.Good luck.Mike

Re: Evinrude 70 HP wiring from scratch

Thank you all - I was able to check out trim & tilt by connecting the wires to the battery using instruction from this post & and by adding hydraulic fluid to the pistons (the service manual has arrived with today's mail and it immediately paid for itself) ...took me a while to open up manual release valve in order to have pistons fully extended & add the fluid, but after a while I got it to move.
I do appreciate your advice and guidance, now I really do not regret selling my sailboat.
