EVINRUDE 92 50 LOWER UNIT OIL DRAIN AND REFILL QUERY

Hi, I'm new to boating and have just got my first boat. I'm working on getting the engine, (Evinrude 50 year 1992) in good shape for spring.
My query is I want to change the oil in the lower unit but I am not sure were the oil plugs are.
Is the fill up plug the one with the angled allen key plug at the top and is the drain the angled regular slotted screw at the bottom of the lower unit to the upper side behind the prop housing?
Both of these - if they are the correct ones? Are in very tight and I can't budge them.
Sorry to appear dumb but as I said I'm a newbie and I have no manual to refer to. Any advice would be appreciated on finding the right plugs and how to get them out and how much oil and type to put in?

Both Vent and Drain/Fill plugs should be large slotted head screws. The drain plug is on the bottom of the gear case just about where the skeg meets the gear case. The vent plug is just above the anti-cav plate...that's the plate right above the prop.

Both are on the starboard side of the gear case.

Drain the old lube out by removing both Vent and Drain plugs.

Fill the gear case from the bottom up until the lube comes out the vent plug hole. Fill slowly so the air has a chance to be pushed out.

Here's the link to the BRP site. Start in the upper left corner where it says "Product" and hit "GO". When you find your model engine, hit the "Gearcase" view. Look for parts 6 & 10.

Recently....like in the last year or so, BRP introduced a new style plug for the vent and drain plugs. This new plug has an Allen Head in it instead of a slot for a screw driver. I'm including this in the chance the previous owner changed one to the new style.

Use a "quality" allen wrench and for the slotted screw, use a "large" screwdriver. Using poor quality tools results in slots that are rounded out and allen wrenches that simply break or round off. You are aware that you fill the lower unit from the bottom until lub comes out the top? Then insert the lower plug followed by the top plug. WalMart has a simple pump that makes the job easier.

I always thought you put the Top plug in first, after the oil comes out, then the lower plug?

I use one of those WalMart type pumps that threads into the lower hole. When the oil comes out the top, it wastes less if you just screw in the top one to create a vacuum so that when you unscrew the pump the oil doesnt come rushing out.

Silvertip, I am agreeing with you on the tool usage,and have noticed the same rounding off you mention.BUT when not using quality tools,why do the slots and allens round out? The tools should fail.

The drain plugs should be better quality.

Why BRP went to allens ..........

Slotted screws it was, but needed a good deal of force to get out. They don't look as though they had been out for some time. Alan heads would make a lot more sense though. Luckily the oil was in good condition. I topped it up by removing the top one then pumping in the new oil via the bottom one. Worked out fine.

I just changed the gearcase oil in my 93 Evinrude 30, I drained the lube from the bottom drain plug, closed it and then filled from the top screw.

What a pain this was, I'm not sure if I did it correctly. Anyways I filled it until I could see that the oil was up in the top screw, is it full?

It called for 11oz but I'm sure it didn't drain that much. I just want to make sure I'm not going to mess anything up when I run the motor next time out.

Actually I didn't read it before changing the oil, I did read my service manual and it said nothing about filling it from the bottom..

If the bottom is the drain plug, won't the oil just come out??

Ok I just drained it again, looks like I'm going to have to do it again, better safe than sorry.

The Evinrude gearcase oil I got comes in a squeeze bottle? Do I need something else with a pump?

Digital, you dont "need" a pump. I just did mine the other day and my bottle had a little tip on it. I just shoved it in the bottom hole and squeezed till it started ooz'ing out the top. I notice on here they say to put the bottom screw in first, I put the top in first. Dont think it would matter too much but the manual says to the bottom screw first too... so I reckon you do it that way. I read the manual afterwards... stupid me.

The most common mistake when changing gearcase lube is to not use new gaskets on the plugs.

ALWAYS use new gaskets. They crush, like plug gaskets, and are not reusable.
