I suppose it wouldn't kill me...if I didn't have to run my business and raise my kids I'd be more into it. Time is valuable to me. I was into it when I thought routine maintenance would bring her back...that's a fun quality kind of time. I need to be able to trust the motor when I invite my family to go out. If I'm on the boat alone and the motor quits, I'll be the only frustrated person...I'd like to limit such possibilities to that specific situation.
Got my eye on a 80's 90hp Mercury for $350. More hp than I'd ever use, harness is cut but I've been down that road and have a dummy ignition setup w/solenoid and key ign switch. My heart isn't set on the merc and I'm still looking. I guess now is a good time to put some paint on the transom ext.

I was also thinking this:
If someone took the valve guide off (couldnt figure a better term but the follower rests in it) and didn't put it on correctly, how will I know for sure the valves are opening and closing at the right time? When I took it off I marked it, but t there is no guarentee the prev owner did that...being the coils look brand new. I looked online a tad for how to be certain it's on correctly but I can't find anything that know wtf I'm talking about.

Foot in mouth... I guess it's called the recoil starter. I knew that it was part of that apparatus but few seem to have such a follower associated with the pull start.
Does anyone know how I can be certain the valves are opening at the appropriate time?

sooo...gibsonman. Back at it, I take it?

You can find parts blow ups online in a variety of spots (google the make and model and should a see a bunch of hits). Can find blowups at mar ine engine dot com . (drill down to your yr/motor and system you want to see.) easier to communicate.

Been going off of this (see link below)... Guess it's part # 376848 that I'm worried about.
Doing all this on my phone...my laptop is shot...only good for quickbooks anymore...makes shrinking pic files down a mystery to me. I uploaded one a few days back but before and after that the files are too big.
Anyway, my apologies for terrible vocabulary regarding parts.
I can't make up my mind on this thing...I love working on motors, I usually win the wars... This one is beating me...as far as broken bolts go I finished up two big bears on the Lower unit last week. The bolt in the head appears to be frozen to the head. I may work that up later but I really need to get the valves to operate in time.
You'll probably want to kick me after this: the recoil seemed to hang up a little as it recoiled...so I pulled it apart this morning.
Now I get to put it all back together, or eBay it.

Is it possible to use without the starter spring and starter rope?

I saw this on YouTube today...the motor is not the exact same as mine but remarkably similar.

http://youtu.be/9quoa7foNzg

The part in question is on the top, in the vid you can see it's not even moving...and the valve actuating arm and lever are not attached.

Here's another vid of a another motor that is very similar to mine. Notice the missing comp relief valves and valve actuating arm and lever...although his motor appears to be an amalgamation of donor motors.

I need to take some time and educate myself more on 2-strokes. from what I'm gathering is that the comp relief valves are to release pressure on startup. Is this correct? If so shall I remove them? ignore them? Turn the motor into an really heavy anchor? Paint it white like a coral reef and dump it the pacific?
