Re: Evinrude Lark IV 35530 (L or 1) Questions.

Paul: Okay I think I understand better now. In the picture that I show below it is the hose that comes out of the left side of the fuel pump. In another picture of the pump I think I can read the words "pressure" on that hose position. Also are shown a couple of pictures of the reed valve area. I notice something in the picture that I never noticed before and it looks like a little fleck of rust or something that is kind dark brown in color. Looks to be about 1/8" in diameter even though it is not exactly round...haha... I knew we should have taken the cover off of the reed valve area and looked that all over. But we can still do that.

"Set that cylinder's piston to top, and get one of the kids to blow into and then suck on that line. (Do not inhale. [Wink] ) Should give you an idea if the crankcase is sealing correctly. You should be able to draw air through the reeds but not blow it back out. With the piston in the down position, you'll just blow through the exhaust ports."

We will do this whenever it is that we next look at it again...

Jimmbo: That is a name that I have been called a lot in my lifetime too...haha... Thanks for the info on the carb.

Thanks again to all who have helped and to anybody else who adds ideas here.

Any idea why the reed plate has been tampered with?
That's got me a little worried...
PS you can get replacement reed gaskets from NAPA Autoparts or Iboats.
OMC 311365, NAPA (Sierra) 18-1225 - gasket between the block and read plate
OMC 311364, NAPA (Sierra) 18-1228 - gasket between the reed plate and manifold.
(If you want for some reason, you can subsitute 311364 with 311365, but not the other way around!)

Paul I don't know why the reed plate has been tampered with if you are judging by the battered screw in the picture. But I suspect that was done when the engine was rebuilt years ago. I would guess that the reed valve working parts were replaced during the rebuild. I can say that me or the kids haven't tampered with that screw...haha...

I imagine we will get back with trying to get this engine started a few days down the pike after the 4th holiday is over with. Then we will do the test you suggested blowing and sucking on the pressure hose coming out of the fuel pump for testing the reed valves and crank seal...

Right now I am working on installing a front mount intercooler on my Supra and that work will take preference over me helping the kids with the outboard motor...

Thanks again Paul for you help and any other who chime in here...

Paul regarding your question "What is the 4th anyway." I see now that you are a furiner...haha...J/K... Here in the US we celebrate our Independence from England and it is a celebration of our "Declaration of Independence" and it is celebrated on the 4th of July every year.

Click on the below link for a better explanation.
http://tinyurl.com/a4lsd

Have a nice day Paul.

Jim
===

:)

I think I would have had to been living out of a refridgerator box in outer Mongolia to not have heard of the 4th of July. :D July 1st is Canada day 'cause old Victoria said so:

II. UNION.

3. It shall be lawful for the Queen, by and with the Advice of Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council, to declare by Proclamation that, on and after the passing of this Act, the Provinces of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick shall form and be One Dominion under the Name of Canada; and on and after that Day those Three Provinces shall form and be One Dominion under that Name accordingly.(4)

(4) The first day of July, 1867, was fixed by proclamation dated May 22, 1867.
When you get back to the Lark, let us know what you find!

Re: Evinrude Lark IV 35530 (L or 1) Questions.

Since I have been working on the installation of my front mount intercooler the kids haven't tended to be working on the outboard motor. Since I am a younger old man I tend to work these projects slowly...haha... But I think I am about to finish up this project, except for the 3" aftermarket T bolt hose clamps which I will install later. I am leaving one main engine undercover off to facilitate access to those clamps until they are installed and to retighten the 2.5" aftermarket T bolt hose clamps I have already installed. After I finish up I will bring some pressure to bear on the kids to finish their outboard motor starting project...haha... Talk with you all later and thanks again for the help.
Jim
===

Still no action by the kids on getting this outboard engine running. They have been busy and so have I...
Still thinking about it though.
Jim
===

Re: Evinrude Lark IV 35530 (L or 1) Questions.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

But not by me. I came home yesterday from being gone all day and the neighbor kid came out of his house with a big smile on his face. I asked him why the big chessy-cat grin... He said my outboard motor is running. I said super and what did you find wrong with it? He said he went and talked to the neighbor who works on outboard motors, part time, and he said he would take a look at the carburetor for him. Low and behold he found the main jet plugged up (was probably not plugged completely but those were the words he used). He cleaned it and installed a carb kit and the kid installed the carb on the motor and it started right up...

I blew through that on more than one occasion. I am thinking now that I may not have sprayed any carb cleaner in that jet before blowing it out... Oh well live and learn. But the main thing is that it is running like a clock and the kid is a "happy camper"...haha...

Thanks for all of the help and sorry I put you all through the wringer trying to help us figure out what the problem was...

Jim
===

I'm glad he got it started, finally. Now, don't be a stranger here.

Originally posted by JB:
Yup. That is a 1962 40HP, Jim.

First, he needs a Service Manual. I suggest kencook.com. Don't try to work on it without a manual.

Next, go to Engine FAQs and do the "Outboard wont start" troubleshooting.

Good luck, and let us know what you find. :)
