Yes I've heard the o ring called a few things,

Her's a diagram and parts list, click here, it may help, not sure what the rubber band is unless its the liner for the housing

If you click on parts lists at the top of that page you can find your motor and diagrams for all the systems on the motor

The rubber band is a grommet that goes in the water tube guide.Would that cause me not to get enough pressure to have water flow if it wasnt installed?

well there's a reason for it to be there, it provides a seal between the water tube guide and the housing, I'd say probably

Now that I think about it the water tube guide slides into water tube in the exhuast housing, the grommet provides a seal between the water inlet tube in the housing and the w/pump housing. Without that grommet there's nothing to stop the water from going up and right back down the water tube, never getting to the motor

Re: Evinrude not pumping water right????

The grommet should should slip down into the opening in the w/pump and be held in place by an indent on the under side of the grommet, the water tube guide is then inserted into the opening in the grommet, then install the l/u. the water tube in the housing should make contact with that grommet providing a seal.

Its been about 6 months since I did this, its taking awhile to come back, must be an age thing :D

Give some thought to pulling the head and having a look see at the water passages.

Re: Evinrude not pumping water right????

Well ive tried everything and have noticed the new impellor cup has a much smaller hole then the old one so im trying that. Of course I lost the O ring that goes on the drive shaft so I gotta go buy another .-what is its purpose?

Another thing that bothering me is that it stopped pumping water after I got in some mud so I assumed the pump was bad. The impellor were not too bad so I assumed the motor was plugged but water seems to come out thermostat with a hose on the tube and also drained below the thermostat.

Check the water intake screen, its part #4 on the diagram I gave you earler, the water has to go through there to get to the pump, maybe its plugged up.

I always thought the little oring was to keep the lube on the shaft splines from eventually coming out. On some of those l/u's that have been in there awhile, I've had to tie 'em to a mule to get them off. Could be those splines can get froze in the powerhead if the lube doesn't stay in place.

Having just replaced a water pump for the first time, I'd predict that it is either

A. The woodruff key was too small. My kit supplied two sizes. I tried both but the larger one locked much better.

B. Woodruff key was installed backwards.

C. The mud has plugged up both intake passageways from the screen to the pump.

Well I actually got it to pump but it seemed to get a little to hot before the water came from the t-stat cover . I put the cover back on and nothing . So I remove the cover again and still nothing.
I double checked the screen and the woodriff key .

Well, as SoLittle suggested maybe its time to pull the head cover, you could have sucked all kinds of mud up in there!

You relize of course that there are small water passages that run through the motor, if these are plugged you may have to pull that cover in order to flush them properly.

TRied the rabbit ears today and they dont seem to get the water to the motor? Maybe you are right although they use to work great.

Sorry to have to tell you this, but I don’t think your problem is solved.

Could be wrong here, but I bet your problem is your sucking air big time under the plate seal of the water pump.

When on the muffs, you have a positive pressure unless your water delivery system is next to none.

In a tank/water, at idle, you may have a natural water seal in the exhaust chamber. Once you run it up on the lake, you will loose that floating seal, over heat, cook the motor…

If you lake test it, be on top of your temps., don’t Joy Ride.

Rebuild water kit, --> $35.oo
Rebuild Engine --> $1600.oo

You decide.....

Re: Evinrude not pumping water right????

Watching this thread to see the resolve. I had to drop my L.U. twice this spring as I put a new pump in but was still not getting water out my Tel-Tale. (I know you said your engine did not have one) Mine is an '84 .70. Turns out the second time to drop the L.U. was in vain as my pump was working fine (you can turn the shaft and see if it is turning properly). Turns out some gunk which turned out to be debris from the old impeller had plugged up the Tel Tale. Also, I don't think it hurt anything, but I used compressed air in my pick up tube and other passages to see if there was good flow. After I got my Tel-Tale fitting unplugged I had great airflow. At the lake everything was fine. That's my water pump story.

Jeff
