I've got an 82 evin. 70hp. that is over charging 17.o volts thought the gauge might be off but verified with a digital volt meter. Any common problems or things to check anyone can suggest. Thanks!

How old is the battery?

Just replaced it yesterday had an optima in it and thought that might be the problem when it went dead but still overcharging with new one.

Re: Evinrude overcharging

Your 82 engine does not have a voltage regulator. Many of the older, especially lower hp engines have only a rectifier. Their charging voltage is commonly unregulated, yielding the voltages you are seeing. This is normal. I'd keep an eye on the water level in the battery through the summer and run the radio a lot. It is possible that your Bombardier dealer may be able to provide you with a specially engineered rectifier/regulator kit which will retrofit to your engine (the dealer likely will have to call the company about this.)

I had heard they were unregulated systems but do i need to worry about electronics (gps, led lights, tach) burning up with this high of voltages cause my tach is not working but its been like that since i got the boat but the other acc. i've put on seem to be o.k.

My 70 hp does the same thing. I asked this question a few years ago, and the consensus seems to be that it is an unregulated system but the amps produced are not high enough to harm anything. I havent fried anything, so I guess its true.

Re: Evinrude overcharging

Some electronics have over- and under-voltage protection circuits that will shut off the device if an over/under voltage condition arises. Not all electronics are protected in this manner so it's hard to say whether or not anything on your boat will be damaged.

Do you know the exact voltage which your battery was being charged? Because when I tested mine this past weekend it got up to 16 volts just at idle. '86 Mercury 90hp

Check the other posts on this forum as I know there is a cheap regulator you can buy for this system. Maybe somebody else will chime in.

Charging at 16.3 volts at the moment, I have had this boat for over 10 years and its the first time I have noticed this, the buzzer now sounds in the control box as well
