I also bought a ring expander. My new rings and larger than the old ones you can clearly see this.

A ring expander isn't really needed. Thumb nails do an excellent job of spreading open those rings, especially on the smaller engines. Of course, if you chew your nails, that's another story.

Rings are larger? Best to insert those rings in the cylinders by themselves to make sure you have the proper ring end clearance.

Just out of curiosity, what's the part number for the new rings?

Like Joe said, check your clearance before you just toss them on the pistons, and stuff them in the cylinders.

Ring set part number 378411 is the proper part number for the 1957 7.5hp Evinrude/Johnson.

Yeah find a bolt supplyer they should have them in stock . I know you can get them still there 1/4 20 thread . If you email them a picture of them they will find them for you . but Im using the 1/4 20 bolts not the oem screws for the head bolts . I may use stainless steel bolts .

Stainless bolts aren't recommended. I'm guessing you mean powerhead mounting screws which were OEM flathead? Do you think OMC used flathead screws to hold on the cylinder head?
Just curious,

@Rogersjetboats454

Thanks for your picture , Im going out to the hardware store for some replacment bolts . I just installed the rings on the pistons and am going to place them in the cylinders . To lube the crank do I need some molly lube for pre engine assembly or just two cycle oil for re assembly . I know I need two cycle oil to lube the cylinder rings and piston and wrist pin . But for the crank I was wondering if I need some molly lube .

Well guys I just installed the pistons and they seam a better fit than before . Im going to assembly the engine when I get a inch pound torque wrench from My nieghbor next door , He as a old school beam type one in inch pounds . When I see him Im going to install the head and bolts when I find new ones . I may have to goto fastinal supply for the bolts , my local meanards dont have them and someone before be striped one of the threads but I fixed it . so for that I want to replace them all if I can .

One thing I want to point out is the new head gasket from evinrude is made of metal not fiber like the old one . Will I need to place some type of permtex on the gasket toi seal it . I was wondering if I need to do this . I have the avation sealer from napa .its the same as the omc sealer that is talked about on this website .I'll let you guys if I need some more help .

Do NOT use sealer on the head gasket. It's a compression gasket and only works once. After you torque it down, don't remove it or you'll need another one.

No. Never apply sealer to a head gasket unless specifically stated by the manufacturer (99.99999% say install on a dry clean surface). If you are 100% sure you got the correct gasket for your engine, it sounds as though BRP is taking a modern approach to head gasket materials. The new gasket will seal just fine as long as all your surfaces are true.

Re: evinrude specks for rebuild 1957 fleetwin 7.5 hp

Yes Im sure , I gave them the part number for the head gasket from marine engine.com . I looked you the part number and BRP had it still in stock . So yes i have the right head gasket , just that its made of metal not fiber now . I also have a question about the crank case , the clymer manual said to use sealer 1000 on the crank case . My crank case when I took it apart had no sealer on it or looks that way . Should I use some sealer on it to seal the crank case . The sealer 1000 is like RTV sealant right or can i use something else . Please let me know , Im almost ready to reassembly the powerhead and want it sealed the right way . Im just waiting on the bolts from fastenal in town . Im going to need a tourque wrench too, but my niehbor is going to take care of that for me .

Marprox Sealer 1000 or OMC Adhesive or Boat Armor Sealer 1000 (same substance)[See Below Note] should be used on any metal to metal or metal (Unless GelSeal Is Called For) to plastic surface (such as impeller hsg to plate, and plate to lower unit surface) to eliminate air leaks. It should also be used on the Spaghetti tubing that is used on many powerhead crankcase halves, lower unit skegs, etc. I have found that this substance works quite well on various "O" Rings such as what are found on lower unit carrier and upper driveshaft bearing housings (Note that this substance is obviously not to be used on all "O" Rings). This substance also works quite well in sealing the surfaces between the lower unit and the exhaust housing to which it attaches, eliminating the unsightly water spray between the two after completing a water pump installation.

NOTE: OMC Adhesive is now Bombardier 3M Product #847 .
