Evinrude with oily points

hello my latest project is a 72 or 73 evinrude 25 horse with points type ignition. i pulled the flywheel off to take a look at the coils and points and such, and discovered that eveything under the flywheel was covered with what smells like premixed fuel. my first thought was that the upper crank seal is bad, but the engine is able to idle down and run good. if it was a bad seal, wouldnt it have problems at low idle due to sucking air in ? also what effects will the wetness have on the ignition ? I actually tore into the ignition due to the fact that i am have a problem while accelerating under a load with the engine dropping in and out on one cylinder.

thanks

Upper crank seal is only thing I think it could be. And it's not bad enough yet to keep it from running. Who knows "how long" it's been seeping. Clean everything up and try it again. Or just replace the seal while you got it apart. Dropping cylinders due to the oil on points.

+1. I agree with bonzo, the upper crank seal is about the only place it could come from. Unless someone physically spilled premix in there somehow. I would try to it on land, rather than waiting for it to fail on the water.

ok cleaned and de-oiled everything under the flywheel. running in the barell, it seems to be a lot better when i throttle it up in gear. the RPM's will hold steady without one cylinder cutting in and out now. it does give me some problem now when i throttle back down to idle, it dies and i have to restart it. I am thinking i will pull the carb and let it soal for a day or so. After sitting all of this time, it cant hurt it any.

you could always do this.......DSCF2075.jpg (points-less ignition) but if the upper seal isnt a beast to change, i would go that route.

The seal is only like 9 bucks plus tax. Change it while you have the flywheel off. IF it had been sitting, and it got that bad from your initial run, it must be totally trashed. Clean and re gap the points after cleaning off mag plate. run business card dipped in acetone through points after setting to 020.
