Is it worth the effort to upgrade the 150 XP to 175 specs, also what is the mechanical difference between these engines, and lastly what is required to make the changes?

If you are talking about a standard 175, the XP 150 probley made more horsepower. XP= extry horsepower.

Re: Evinrude XP 150 (1985)

I thought that the XP decal was just a sales hype because I don't see any difference in my manual on any of the 150's. I thought that I could add the bubble exhaust, and the 175 exhaust housing and get a little more bang for my bucks.

I thought the bore and stroke on engines 150 through 185hp were the same. (149CID)
I thought the only differences were the carburetors and exhaust tuning.
Where can I find out what the real difference in these engines?: :)

Look at a parts book. Dhadley probley knows more about this then me. I have heard that some of the the XP/GT 150 models made close to 200 hp.

Re: Evinrude XP 150 (1985)

Some of the 150 XP/GT's had the 200 porting. The XP/GT heads are some of the best stock heads available. The "bubble" exhaust cannot be (correctly) added to the 150. If you did replace the powerhead with a "bubbled" exhaust block, you need to change the adaptor plate and the tuner also.

Tell us more about your rig, how its set up and how the motor runs now. Make sure you are getting all you can from what you got before you get something else.

Good luck!

Re: Evinrude XP 150 (1985)

My (1985) XP 150 is installed on a 19ft. CC Key West fishing boat. The engine set without use for twelve years. Before I installed the motor on the new Key West, I replaced the water pump, thermostats, fuel lines, recovery lines, and vacuum line, also replace the no-wire VRO with a four-wire VRO and new VRO remote oil tank with new oil lines and new sparkplugs.

I have not run it at WOT much because I use it for crabbing in the Bush River, I spend about three to five hours of idling while pulling traps. :)

One of the problems with the engine now is the tach stop working and I will get a bog or miss sometime before it really warms up. :(

Then it will run strong up to about 4800 / 4900 rpms, pulling a 14 ¼ X 21 SST prop @ 50 mph OMC speed meter, or 48.9 GPS.
This motor would push my old 17.8 Manatee run-about 60 mph @ 5800 rpm same prop OMC speed meter. ;)

This afternoon while cleaning up the ignition terminals, installing dialectric grease, and setting the final cam follower / snyc linkage. I noticed a very small weepy fuel leak in my fuel line manifold. I will check it the manifold tomorrow to see if it is cracked, or one of the clamps are causing the leak. (could possibley) cause of the early running bog.
