I found a couple of discussions on boat disposals but nothing very recent, i m wondering if somne of the rules have changed in recent years...

For the sake of discussion what does it take to dispose of a fiberglass boat in central TX?

I have my eye on an old 16 footer as a doner to support my resto. But, I am worried about what kind of hassle I could be getting into trying to get rid of the hull after I get what I need from her.

I have not been able to inspect carefully yet but suspect it is pretty bad becuase it looks to have been setting open for some years, and not even tipped up at the front.

Anybody had recent experience with this in my area?

Ayuh,... It all depends on your local landfill....

Mine'll take complete hulls, at $60. a ton...
Or,...
Better yet is the ad on craigslist for a Free boat...

I've heard of folks cutting an old boat into pieces small enough to fit into a trash can. Maybe a Sawsall would be helpful, but for fiberglass I'd wear a dust mask. Maybe set boat over in back yard, fill with dirt, plant tomatoes in it....neighbors might Love that!...

They make a pretty fire but give the marshmellows a lil twang!
My county has a land fill and for the low price of $5 for 2 years you can dump anything you want including a limited number of tires
So check with the county first

Three prong approach...

1. Craigslist ad for "free boat" like bondo mentioned. I have found that it's actually better to charge like $50 or something like that. Trust me, there are good reasons why.

2. If number one doesn't work, srtip off all the stuff you can use/sell and take the hull to your local landfill. I just dumped one yesterday for free.;):D

3. If number two doesn't work, chop it up into smaller pieces and put it out at the curb. I try to be nice to my trash guy and only put 4-6 big chunks at a time. A thin metal cutting wheel on a grinder should make pretty quick work of that glasser.

Have fun!

I towed a resto doner to my local landfill. Tied it to a post and drove the trailer out from underneath it. They charged $16.

You can see if Capt. Macks used boats (boat junk yard) would take it. He is not too far from the Austin airport. I have bought from him a couple of times.

Thanks all,

I will definatly check with local land-fill, That would be easy enough.

craigs list sounds good too.

I also have access to a dumpster that I could dribble pieces into over a few weeks time.

If I do cut it up I was thinkning tyvek coveralls, gloves, safety glasses, face shield, good dust mask and a CHIANSAW BABY!!!!!! YEA......... may as well have some fun ya-know.

Now THAT sounds like FUN!

Do like I did with my last failed project boat, after I called the "Boat Angel" doation people, (and they wouldnt take it because I would not donate my trailer too) I sold the trailer, and told the buyer he HAD to take the boat too. Then it was HIS problem.
Hey...you didnt buy my old boat did you? ;)

My brother is with our local Sherriff's dept, and said Some guy at one of our local, more remote, ramps must have disposed of his boat by backing in late one night, and pushing his old trihull boat off the trailer, and leaving. It ended up a mile or two down river against a bridge abutment. I dont think they ever did find out whose it was.

Put it in front of my house with a "For Sale $500" sign on it. It'll be gone the first night.

I used my circular saw for most of one I cut up, went through a couple blades, put it on the curb in managable pieces. Worked pretty good for most of it .....

Craiglist is the best bet.....you can sell ANYTHING on there, (my son picks up pure junk and it sells on Craiglist) That way you make $50.00 and don't have to haul it off.
