ATTENTION!!

I just happened on a cosemetically beautiful Avenger 17' bubble deck. I found it on eBay. Here's the link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...m=320020882653&ih=011&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT

Anyway, I tried to win this bid but ran out of time. The guy who had it said he would sell the boat for $1000, and it had the original custom trailer that was REALLY solid. I talked him into selling it to me, but it was "sight unseen." He assured me that it was solid, so I had a cashier's check made out and drove from the Seattle area all the way to Sacramento in 12 hours.

The place that had this boat was a boat salvage yard. What he told me is that if they couldn't sell this boat they were going to part it out and cut up the hull and throw it away (!).

Trying to shorten this... When I got there, yes the boat was in beautiful cosmetic condition, and the trailer was great. The bottom of the boat was immaculate. It looked like the only things it had touched were the water and the trailer. But... The floor was bulging up, the boat appeared to have been built without a bilge area (water getting in the boat would flow along the floor to the drain hole, but no step-down into a bilge). This meant I had no access to check the condition of the stringers. The transom was solid (ice pick check), but there was evidence water had been getting into the false bottom. For $1000 I just couldn't buy this boat, because I don't have another $1000 to replace the stringers and floor should it need it.

If someone out there is familiar with these boats, lives in the central/northern part of CA, and has an extra $2000 to potentially burn, please go and rescue this beautiful boat from the saws-all!

Seems a bit steep for a boat with no motor and in need of an overhaul!

Agreed, but they were selling it as a solid boat. If this boat truly turned out to be without question solid, is a grand too much? It was apparent after looking at the boat that the guy I was dealing with was the "phone jockey" for the yard. He either didn't know much about what to look for in a solid boat, or was b.s.ing me.

Re: Fans of CEE BEE Avenger!

Blanch, I have an Avenger Mach I, with a Merc 1500. Sounds like the same design as the boat you say but mine is only 16'. I have had it 25 years. The floor in my Avenger needed replacement, but the stringers were covered in glass and were OK. I replaced the foam and the floor and recarpeted. I use my boat like an old english sports car. I drive it whenever I need a thrill. The hull is very fast, but rides a bit flat. I mounted a jackplate, but am not really sure it has improved things all that much. I plan to rehabilitate it this off season.

BTW, mine only had a mimimal amount of foam under the floor and a chunk in the bow. If it sinks, only the bow floats (straight up).

Sounds cool. Well, a grand seemed a little steep to me to find out if the stringers were bad or not. That door is closed any way, even if I decided I really wanted it. I'm NOT driving all the way down there again and spend another $300 on gas.

Now I'm looking at a Mach II that is in my area. At least I can get my hands on it and know exactly what it needs before I make an offer.
