I will say this, HOW could anyone feel safe hauling *** on the water at night. When I boat at night, steerage speed and two lookouts in front. Needless to say even lit up boats can be challenging to see, and unlit bouys, no wake bouys, etc... near impossible in certain light.

Do yourself a favor, and don't go there. I've been there twice this year, and it was a zoo both times. Totally out of control boaters left and right.

Where are you coming from? Dont be too discouraged, it's a beautiful lake! I get any of my towing needs done during the weekdays and weekend mornings and weekend days (craziest) we just go anchor deep in a cove out of the way.

U.S. Coast Guard, Office of Auxiliary and Boating Safety) shows that 23 percent of vessels involved in recreational boating accidents were PWCs and 28 percent of boating injuries involved PWCs although, according to the NMMA, they still only accounted for eight percent of recreational watercraft in use.
The NTSB and U.S. Coast Guard data show that the major cause of accidents involving PWCs is collision. In proportion to all watercraft they have more accidents.

Other boats cannot see you very well since the helmsman is blinded by 1 million candle power. In a busy traffic lane you have no business operating that light.

Maybe the other helmsmen should wear sunglasses eh?... or maybe you should read my second post to this thread.

It's a hand help spot and I don't use it constantly nor do I shine it in peoples eyes. I mainly use it to scope out the water ahead of me for debris or if I hear someone in a boat without the proper nav lights. If I hear someone motoring toward me at a high rate of speed I'll shine it in the air or on the bank to let them know I'm there in case they don't see my nav lights. We've got knucklehead bass tourny guys that fish night tourneys and run wide open on our lake and usually have their eyes glued to the GPS instead of where they're going in front of them. The canned air horn also comes in handy for them.

I'm in montclair. The only places I;ve gone out have been teh hackensack, budd lake and the hudson... and I have yet to splash this project!!!

I guess all areas aren't the same. We go out several times a week just before sunset, as do some of the others here at the marina. It's quiet, peaceful and romantic.

Budd Lake is not a lake. Its a big mud puddle. Went there once to test a boat, and the water so sooooo dirty I didn't want to touch it. Had a funny brown/green color. And it averages only 4 feet deep, so watch where you go! A guy leaving was fishing and I asked what he had caught. I forget exactly what fish it was, but he said the water is so polluted that he puts the fish back.

Hopatcong is clean, and the best time to go is on week days. The Hopatcong state park launch is nice, and half the price of any other launch site on the lake.

Cherry Lake is small, very clean, great fishing (I'm told). But I stopped to look at the launch, and it is steep, gravel, and the dock is old. You will need to use your fenders.

One place in NJ I want to check out is the Snake Hill launch on the Hackensack river. It actually looks very nice from Google Earth. Looks like the river can be navigated quite a ways up before a damn is reached.

Also wanted to try out the Passiac River, but not sure if there are launches, and if the water way is clear of under water obstructions.

I've gone to budd lake to test unfinished boats and such. I agree though, the water makes you sick!

Hackensack river is AWESOME!!! Go there, I promise you won't be disappointed. You can go all the way out to the Newark bay. I can't believe you called it snake hill too... now it's the "county park" or whatever, but i've always known it as snake hill. It's a great destination, but it's really lonely, so if you have any trouble, help is a ways away. Probably the NJSP from newark. Also, the water gets really shallow all over and without power trim of a depth finder, it can be tough to navigate..

There's a launch to the passaic in Nutley and it's HORRIBLE. It's only usable at high tide. It can get to be a foot deep and the parking lot is tiny and it's near a busy intersection. but hey, it's free. I have yet to attempt to launch there, but it's 10 minutes away from my house so it would be great if I could use it...
