my son & I(mom) are currently rebuilding 14' Ashcraft from stringers up. we have done some hull repair, including glassing some cracks & holes in hull & keel with great ease.Stringers will be next. My question concerns another old boat of ours (15' Answer). It has a couple structural issues I am repairing since fixing other boat has given me confidence. Where the gunnel meets inside(side of boat) & top of transom near pole holder(corner), there is gelcoat crack & fiberglass failure. I can cut this out easily, but how to rebuild it is confusing me, since there is no other side access like on the bottom of a boat. In other words, a hole in hull I can patch by putting a backing against outer hull & layering until I get desired thickness. Then remove backing & gelcoat from outside. This one I can only access from out side. The area I would need to cut out would be about 6" along top of gunnel, BUT also down inside wall about 4". Any tricks to this project? I was thinking some material(thin) that has flexibility that I could stuff in held by a knotted string that I could hold as a form of the original contour to glass over to start lay. I am perplexed on this one, but sure there is an easy solution I'm not figuring out. Sorry-no pictures available.
