I'd mount the engine first and look at whatcha got.
Those jack brackets are often used to a raise outboards,
seem to work out ok.
Converting over to a teleflex steering system might make life easier.
HAve you tested the transom core yet?
They only last so long.

thanks for the info jonesg I already pulled the transom and floor. I am a marine mechanic that owns his own shop so yes teleflex no feed back is ordered and on its way. Just wanted to know if the wood would be ok exposed but covered in epoxy and paint.

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

not much to report this morning. I ordered teleflex no feed back steering, stopping off at the local building center to see about ordering marine grade plywood and material for the floor and transom. I ordered a new steering wheel. When it gets here I'll post pics of it. Since I dont know for sure what I will put on for power I havnt thought about gauges yet. I have a Mercury 60hp with trim and tilt but would rather have ane Evinrude or Johnson to put on so the controls will wait untill then. I am an evinrude/johnson fan way more than mercury. Since I rebuilt this merc from the ground up I know the motor and know ill get good service from it but it seems sacrilegious to put a mercury on this starcraft boat. Every resto project Ive seen with a starcraft has an evinrude or johnson on it. Also most people put the older motors on there boats. Im going for a more modern motor to keep things more simple as far as getting parts. Winterization time is here in Northern Wiscosin and I am a one man show so I am jam packed full of boat work to do. We have 92 lakes in our town not to mention Lake Superior 13 miles away. I do a mobile service as well as working out of my shop from home. I will get some work done on the boat this Thursday, Friday, and this weekend. Maybe even a little Wednesday. Have fun all. Ive added a poll to see what I should power with so Ill leave it up to you all mercury or evenrude/Johnson? keep in mind I can put up to a 75hp motor on this thing but will probably stay under 70hp.

While in my opinion a 70/75 JohnnyRude would be ideal......I'd run that Merc.

Keep looking, there are a few of us heathens running Mercs on our Starcrafts:D

RickAirMedic has the same exact Merc 800 that I've been running as well.(yes I am seeking a nice 70hp OMC from the late 70s myself:p)

Sounds like you live in a boater's paradise up there:)

Hey dont get me wrong Mercurys are ok if thats what ya like. I prefer evinrude/johnson cause ive had better luck with them and the seem a little easier to work on. Lets put it this way I have about 10000 dollars in special tools for mercury and about 5000 dollars in special tools for evinrude. I just plain like them better. Its like the Packers and the vikings I love the Packers and bleed green and gold. I like to watch the Vikings self destruct lol.

So far evinrude/johnson is in the lead. I will let the poll decide what motor I put on this thing. I winterized 4 boats and serviced 2 four wheelers today. Dosnt sound like much but I am a one man operation. Ive been making a list of all the things I need and will post it when I get it done.

So this boat only has one coat of paint on it and most of it is not flaking off. Can i sand this thing and primer the whole thing and then paint? Or should I go to stripping it down. also most of the section under the floor is not painted, That should be the easy part right?

Although I ordered a new steering wheel I thought this one was kind of cool with the rope design.

I might decide to see if it will clean up and save it other wise its going on craigslist to see if any one else wants it.

Man with a little time, Patience, Epoxy, and Paint you could make that wheel look like a new one. AND it would be VERY unique!!!

If you decide to get rid of it send me a PM and I will deal with you for sure. I have a 62 Lonestar Flamingo that it would look great on.

I'm just sayin...:D

I would also be interested in that wheel to go in my 1960 Sea King, so if glass don't work out, send me a note!

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

It looks like a Nassau ;)

Three knee braces and the HP rating.

I had a 1966 Nassau for a year.........http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=293565&highlight=nassau&page=3 It was a head scratcher for some time to properly identify mine

Nassau is a long shaft though. I have one.
And I'd just stick the most modern, reliable motor I could on mine. I wish I could afford to put a late model yamaha or honda on it.

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

Ok eventfull night here. Wasp suck when ripping apart a boat. Found 5 wasp nest under varous parts of the boat as I was working. Hit one nest with a hammer and had to run fast. No wasp killing stuff available so I used starting fluid and carb cleaner. It worked! Went back to work and removed the windshield. I was trying to remove the dashboard and got all of the bolts and screws out but was unable to remove it. I think they must put the dash in first before the bow cover. So I decided that I wanted to remove the bow cover as well. Went to remove the bow cap and cant budge it. Finally figured out that you have to remove the rub rail first then the cap will come off. Unfortunatley all the screws had nuts on the back and since I cant be 2 places at once and my daughter is in bed I have to wait untill Friday night to get the bolts out to test my theory.
So for all you pic nuts I snapped a couple to help feed your habits.

I dont disagree with you but I am going american on this one. Allthough yamaha is mostly mercury now. I am letting the poll pick the motor. I thought it would be fun to let you guys have some input.

As far as the Nassau you are correct. 15 inch transom with my dimensions is a seamist from 1963. I will find out more I hope when I register the boat.

If you take a picture of where you're at with the dash, I can probably tell you what you're missing in order to remove it. I replaced mine in my Jupiter with a PVC trim board from Lowes. It was real nice to work with and will never rot.

Thanks ezmobee I will try tonight to post some pics. I decided to remove the bow cover any way because I have an idea to mount a fuel tank on the braces under it. Reinell used to do it alot and so did many other boat manufacturers. I need to replace the wood braces with somthing meatier.

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

Hi Jim nice project the main suggestion I could make is to raise that transom
to modern height When I did my 1961 14' Elgin I kept the 17" transom because
I had the original OB later I put a 50hp E-tec on her and had to raise the
transom it was a pain and as nice as it came out I'm not really happy with the
look of it. My Elgin is rated for 60hp max so at 17 ft Id guess yours would take
up around 75hp but with a modern 50hp on my Elgin it scoots right along Ive
had her around 32mph on the GPS at a little over 6000ft I haven't had it much
lower yet so I don't have numbers for lower altitudes. My 40hp Elgin did 30mph
at 400ft though and 23 at 6000ft.

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

Thanks Hoggar,

I will be extending the transom 5 inches when I put the wood in. I have to have a new transom cap made because I messed up the old one trying to get all the little nails out. I will have that one made to extend over the new wood. When installed I will seal the inside of it with 3m. Should work fine. I will also install either the home made jackplate or one of the extender brackets from cnc.

By the way the elgin looks good!

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

Finally got a nice day to get her outside to at least clean her out of old wasp nest and do a water leak check on the hull. Not a drop came out in 2 hours of sitting full of water. I will gluvit the inside just because I dont want to do it again.

A couple of questions first the bottomn under wher the floor was is not painted. I am wondering do I need to paint it? It looks really really good there and was never painted before.

Is it ok with the starcraft powers that be if I sqap out the Seaking plates for the Starcraft donar plates? Please Please!
