Alot going on tonight I removed the bow cap and floatation inside along with the wood braces.

Along with all that I got the dash out as well. I know this sounds sacrilegious
but man she looks good as an open bow. Just think about that nice casting deck upfront and the bow mounted trolling motor. Next step is to flip her over and get the trailer out. I have another trailer that is heavier than this one so I have awhile to decide which one I want to use.

There is no slowing you down.

You'll have an E-tec on her and flying soon enough...

Nice thread, nice project under way...good that your daughter is involved. It's an open book now, redesign it the way you want according to how it will be used on the water...just make sure it is structurally sound...sometimes bench seats and bow skirts are used to add integrity/support to the hull design. IMHO, it would look good and function well as an open skiff with small side console and front and rear fishing seats...casting decks can be dicey on V-hulls if they are high enough to mess with the center of gravity.

Nice work Jim!

I know some of my Starcraft bros grumble when I say this but...

I'd be currently on the hunt for a 16 footer and if a closed bow find it's way to my place I'd for sure make it a open bow. I'd just assume grab an SS (open bow) if I can help it, but if not, the cutting wheel will make it so:D

I'll be following along with ya!

Cheers!

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

Thanks guys for the vote of confidence.

Today I will be turning this thing up side down to get the hull prepped for paint. I will also be working on the trailer.

I think I will put her back to original due to the fact she is so pretty. The boat will be used for fishing and cruising and pulling the family on tubes. In order to get my wife in a boat she has to be comfy. You know the old saying if mamas happy the whole family is happy. I will be putting in pedestal seats. They will be removable to readjust for fishing when fishing. I will eventually be adding a bow mount trolling motor with remote control. and have plans to put in a livewell. I will be beefing up the bow braces to hang a fuel tank in the bow. It will be mounted as low as I can for stability without taking away for storage under there.

The next couple of weeks will be down right crazy in the shop. Ill spend evenings working on the boat. Then after that I will be spending alot of time on the boat during the day as well. My goal is to splash her as soon as possible this spring. So I have time but time can get eaten up on a project lol.

Oh yeah almost forgot. A leaf blower/vacumn works awesome for getting those old leaves and crud from years past out. :)

Jim, Is that bow cap all aluminum as well? I's like to see the underside edge if it's not too much trouble. I recall Alzo warped his while blasting it so I assumed it was but I wasn't sure if they all are. Just curious.

Cheers and full steam ahead!

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

I got the hull turned over today. It was pretty easy.
I decided after reading all the threads on resto projects that I would experiment with different strippers. Well since its Sunday and the only thing I had to try was gasket remover from Napa. Guess what it worked great. I still had to sand but only to get the loose paint off. I cleaned it off after sanding and it left the hull super clean. I will wipe the hull down after im done stripping and sanding to make sure there isnt any residue left. It looks as if I only have one layer of paint on this boat so if every thing goes like it did this evening then ill have the bottom stripped before the weekend.

Ill be using rust oleum marine for paint. What primer should I use? Also can I use rust oleum topside on the hull bottomn?

Jim, I saw you looked at my thread, and you know the rusto primer did NOT work for me. Others have used it with no problems but mine just didn't stick:confused: I bought some ZC primer from NAPA, HD, and Pleasants Hardware and they seemed to do ok but the Moeller ZC(?) I got per NB's and other suggestion works GREAT. I am also using Interlux for primer/paint.

You can use Rusto products on the bottom also if you don't plan on leaving your boat in the water for more than a couple days.

And yeah, don't use that weird Rusto aluminum primer that Dale used. I would ZC it, then Rusto clean metal primer, then top coat.

I see you got the dash out. Have you made a decision on the Wheel yet. I am still interested in it if you decide not to use it.

I'm just sayin...:D

Well not much going on right now. Tomorrow I plan on getting paint stripper. My truck is out of commision for a little while. My shop is boat rich and time poor. Could be a worse problem to have. Now I'm done crying. The boat is going to pick up speed here soon.

Nice work on your boat Jim. I always like that clean aluminum under the deck. ;) Looking forward to more pics and progress reports. Evinrude or Johnson...... Tough call. What was original??

Thanks Coolness,

The boat didnt have a motor on it when I bought it. Nor much of anything else for that matter. I have a 60hp Mercury Classic with oil injection completley rebuilt. I bought the motor to flip it. I am letting the poll decide what brand I hang on her. I am glad its leaning torwards the evinrude/Johnson side. I do not like mercury. Especially after the last one I worked on today.

Ohhh the pain. (86 Merc 135hp)
Jim you mentioned oil injection, do you as a mechanic trust them?

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

Yes I do, if they are properly maintained. The 60 I have was rebuilt because of a carb problem that the customer kept trying to run. It was running too lean due to plugged up carb. The vro from evinrude has gotten a very bad rap, most of those meltdowns are from carb issues as well but since the vro seems to be a big mystery it gets the blame. Not to mention they are expensive to fix. Although there arnt as many vro motors around my kneck of the woods.

Oil injection is a great thing to have. It meens you dont have to mix fuel. It saves on oil in the long run. They usually burn cleaner because the mixture is always right.

Oil injection is bad because people dont always maintain there motors like they should.
Most of the time a power head failure is not due to the injection system but a lean running condition from poor maintenance meaning not stabilizing your fuel. Or pushing a motor that is running to lean.
Thats just my opinion and experience.
