Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

Well i got an email back from the woman selling this boat: http://duluth.craigslist.org/boa/1983058694.html

I offered her $200.00 for the boat with out the motor which I thought was pretty fair, which she stated it was but thought the motor being the first 4stroke ever built was worth the $500.00 and since she wanted to sell it as a package. She told me she will get back to me if no one else wanted it. I wont hold my breath :)

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

I got some more done on stripping paint. I thought this would be faster due to the paint stripper ive been using. Well since it is spray on and 8 bucks a can. It also takes like a whole can to do 2 or 3 feet section. Its taking me longer than I thought. I dont mind though Ive got the whole long cold winter to get her done.

I am activley looking for a motor and controls for this boat. Ive said it alo already but this new motor must have tilt and trim. And according to my poll it looks as if johnny/rude is blowing mercury right out of the water. So it looks as if I am looking for an evinrude or Johnson. It will be a 3 cylinder and probably a 70hp (boat is rated to 80hp). I have a fellow boat mechanic in the next town that has that same motor sitting on a pallet in his shop that needs an overhaul. I could get it for next to nothing and probably will if nothing better pops up soon. Dont want to get caught with my pants down in the spring.

Those 3 cyl 70hp OMC outboards can be tough to track down for a good price, I'd like one myself and might buy a junker 'glass rig to get one as there are a few in my area currently for $800 that could be talked down and parted out, trailer sold, etc.

If I had your skills to rebuild one I'd certainly do that to save some cash though. Good luck with the search:)

Did some more stripping on the hull. Zip strip is working much better and is less expensive. It has a thicker consistency and holds on verticle surfaces alot better. The splashwell and hull bottom will be done soon I hope :). I also stripped all the old stuff off of the dash. I will be making a new one but wanted the old one for a pattern.

Still moving along Jim, keep the motion going! A marine mechanic calling a force/chrysler motor an anchor, hmmm go figure.
I don't recall that one in your poll.

That 9.9 actually runs pretty good abd it actually belongs to a customer who bought it at the same auction that I got my voat from. I have the parts to reseal the gearcase and an impeller for it. I inherited the twin of this motor instead of being paid for the service. I hope that craigslist will help me make a few bucks torwards a new motor for my boat. Chryslers arnt that bad just hard to get parts for. Which makes me not qant to work on them.
Well out to the shop to work some more on the boat. Pics later

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

SO ive been working on my furnace in my shop so that I can stay warm for paint. I have a hvac for a brother but cant get him over here for the fix so ill do it my self and tell him to get lost when he needs boat work done. Ill be working on the stripping pretty hard this weekend.

Im waiting to here from someone who might have a 70hp evinrude that needs a rebuild for $200.00. This motor will push this boat just fine and be good for tubbing with the family.

I also might of acquired another starcraft for $200.00, looks like a jupiter.

http://duluth.craigslist.org/boa/1983058694.html

Might pic it up this weekend. Any one interested in the homelite?

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

Started stripping pain again and got impatient. Spread alot of stripper and started pressure washing to soon. So tomorrow I am taking a day off of working in my shop to get the furnace working because the temp outside is 50 and I think it is to cold for the stripper to work as well as usual. I will not pressure wash untill the whole hull is stripped because it was funny watching the stripper gel up right away when the cold water hit it. I wont post any pics now because it is a not so pretty thing.

If I decide for sure to get the starcraft from my earlier post I will keep that one for a later project. The homelite might just be a good motor depends on whats wrong with it.

Jim, I am sure you know this, but I'll say it anyway. Please be carefull in an enclosed garage with stripper and heat. If the fumes don't get ya, a big BOOM could.
BTW, I used paste stripper in the cold too and watched it gel up. It still works but is quite a bit slower.

thanks for the concern fshngho. I have the furnace in the other side of my shop enclosed and doors closed. I also have an exhaust system in my shop as well. I am a trained firefighter/emt and understand the dangers.

I think if I would have not been so impatient it would have worked just fine.

i love this site!

Re: Finally an old tinny that I can work on with my daughter

Work has halted till I finish fixing my shop furnace. Of course it would have been cheaper to buy a new one but that would be to easy. I order parts and work hard to make sure the part numbers are correct and they still get the wrong ones. The furnace will be fixed tomorrow for sure.

Ain't that the way it always works? I have to fix this, so I can do that, but first I need to order this so I can repair that, then I need to.....

And everyone thinks these things are simple.:D
