I can't set mine any deeper since the mounting bracket it self would stick down under the lowest point on my transom ....

Piece of 1/8 aluminum
Use cardboard first to make template.
(Took me 2 tries to make it nice and tight)
It will still pop up if it hit something in the water
but it is tight enough that there is no spray around it.
Score the bend line with sharp knife if you don't have breaker.
It will help you to make nice sharp bent.
No additional holes needed to mount it just copy holes from the mounting bracket to the piece.
I made all cuts with miter saw ( Don't let the blade go too deep and cut VERY slow unless you have very fine teeth blade. Aluminum is non ferrous so it won't damage your carbide blade)

Re: Finally got new Humminbird 575 installed - transducer spray :(

I am new to this post. I have been trying to find a solution for my 797si transducer. I have a wicked rooster tail but it only sprays on the left side. The light bulb just turned on when I saw your design. I think the U joint contributes to some extent but that mount screw sticking out about half an inch might be the culprit. I will try your solution first before I modify my assembly. Hope it works for me.

Thanks for the compliment !
I guess you didn't read the post where Humminbird indicated to
caller that there is NO issue like this and they never heard of this problem :)

They wouldn't BS customers .... or would they ? :)

Not trying to hijack, but are the transducers on the 565 series the same? I'm looking into getting one of those for the boat I'm redoing to chase stripers in the spring.

No, 565 is using XNT 9 20 T
I presume that it is smaller

That really looks good and I know of several people that would buy one. I also know for a fact that Humminbird is aware of this problem. We have a rep from Humminbird that frequents our board at Crappie.com and this has been brought up to him.

Great show him the pic and ask them to produce them in some type of plastic with nylon in it. The aluminum design can't be used in salt water and it will probably pit out or discolor in fresh water too.

Nice looking temporary solution though and thx for the pic from the designer. Put me on your list if you want to make a few up for your buddies on Iboats . . . :D

I'd spring for one for up to $20 including shipping.

In looking at your design you have definitely isolated the problem. It has nothing to do with the up and down placement of the transducer once it's mounted correctly so it's not hanging down below the boats bottom. Going higher does nothing.

Clearly, it's because these transducers are of such a monstrous size they are mounted too far away from the boat in their brackets allowing the spray to shoot up in that big gap between the boat and the transducer.

Shouldn't take much for Humminbird to come up with a fix rather than deny they have a problem and continue to lose sales to Garmin and Lowrance. I for one if I was in the market for another unit would not touch a Humminbird until they resolved this issue.

I have not had a response back from Humminbird with my request to fix this issue as yet.

wow, how did you cut all of those smooth, round curves with a mitre saw? Did you use a jig saw or something for those?

Just cut the basic shape with miter saw and remove as much as possible of the material to your curved line. Then grab rounded file ( or router) and you
be done in no time ! Perhaps the shape could be simplified but on my first try I wasn't tight enough and I had small streams splashing around

Humminbird response:

Dear Sir,

Thank you for contacting Humminbird. We do apologize for what is being experienced at this time on the boat. Your information has been sent appropriately. Humminbird is evaluating possible changes/enhancements but at this time time there are not any details that can be shared. With larger transducers there is going to be more drag through the water and therefore more splash than what would be encountered with a smaller transducer. Let us know if you have any further questions.

Regards,
Jennifer-CRC

What they don't seem to get it's not the drag through the water cause if it's mounted correctly it has very little area exposed to drag. The problem is the large gap between the mounting bracket and the transducer which allows water to spray up through it.

At least from their response they seem to be aware of the issue.

Re: Finally got new Humminbird 575 installed - transducer spray :(

Hey everyone, new member here.

I am waiting for my 1197 to show up and was poking around looking at all things Humminbird and ended up here.

Is the problem the water being deflected by the transducer as it passes between the ducer and the bracket?? That's what it looks like to me anyway after seeing the pic of the splash shield that was fabricated, (sweet looking piece btw!!)

Probably a dumb idea but wanted to ask, why not, after being satisfied with the location/setting of the transducer does one not just fill that gap with some marine silicone? Seems it would hold in place well enough to resist blowing out from water pressure. (might be wrong here) But still be removeable with some effort if needed.

Just a thought, back to browsing the boards!

Re: Finally got new Humminbird 575 installed - transducer spray :(

One can use a piece fashioned from a stainless steel switch plate (Loews $1.39). I just picked one up actually they had a blank switch plate cover. I just used one to firm up a plastic bracket for my VHF radio's mike connection.

I'm going to fashion one for my 797's transducer too.

You don't want to fill the hole because if you hit an obstruction it's designed to pop up out of the bracket. I've already had that happen to me. If you fill the hole it might not flip up anymore.

Pick up a plate, take a hacksaw and cut a diagonal cut about a 1/2 inch on each corner. Then you can flatten the plate out in a vice around the edges or put it on a 2 x 4 and tap it flat with the end of a piece of wood and a hammer.. Make a cardboard pattern of what you want it to look like and trace that pattern out on the plate. Now that it's a flat piece of metal, it's real easy to cut out the traced pattern with just a hacksaw. It's a lot easy to do this with a vice though. Safer too as your are less likely to slip and cut yourself.

I have a new 525 I got from basspro that looks different from the 575 but it is doing the exact same thing, humminbird needs to address this issue, I will definitely complain, and all of y'alls suggestions are great!
