Finally got the manual

I finally got my factory service manual for the 1975 Johnson 6 and its great. Now I still need to fix the sputtering problem. Once I run for about 15 minutes its starts sputtering real bad and only gets worse. I just had the carb off and cleaned it, checked all the passages and its like brand new. I did notice that one of the nuts that holds it on was not even finger tight but when I put it back on I made a custom wrench and put a lock washer on it and snugged it up good. Although that didn't fix the sputter I figured it can't hurt. Only other thing I've done as of yet is pull the spark plugs and noticed something, the plugs (Champion J6C at .030) have a little screw on thing (not sure what it's called) that actually makes contact under the boot of the spark plug wire. Well the one on the lower cylinder was loose, could that have something to do with my sputter? I'm going to go ahead and get new plugs and try it but I was just wondering if anyone else has seen this problem before? Especially before I go tearing the flywheel off (something I've never done before).

Thanks

Re: Finally got the manual

What you call sputtering may be what old time 2 stroke guys call "four cycling", firing on alternate strokes. That is caused by the engine running too rich.

Make sure the float level is correct and that the float needle seals correctly.

I don't remember if the 1975 engine had an adjustable high speed jet, but if it does try leaning it out (clockwise) a quarter turn at a time. Do this only after the above carb checks.

FYI: 1975 6hp has a fixed High Speed jet, no adjustment necessary, but must be clean...

Re: Finally got the manual

The float seated good and I don't have any problem with the low speed. I guess I'll start with the plugs then work my way up to tearing the flywheel off and replacing points and such till I find the problem. Frustrating, but I guess I can't complain for a 31 year old motor.

Thanks for all the input
