Re: finding a reboot disc

Well I got the discs and went thru the reinstall of them and something went bad. Comes up with blue screen error. Volsnap.sys is error and I can't find much of anything on this iPhone browser. Need some help on redoing the boot. Tried just running the CDs again they say loading and then goes to windows screen tried safe mode. I'm out of ideas but I'm sure someone here prolly has something better then what I can come up with

Re: finding a reboot disc

Well I've been trying to do research on this without another computer really sucks. I'm looking for a way to get into the computers recovery discs again it says it loads but doesn't let me select any options, it just starts to load vista again. Anytime I try to start the computer whether it's in safe mode or in normal startup it goes to the volsnap.sys bsod! Very frusterating!!

when the computer first boots, ESC or something along those lines should get you the Boot Order menu (it'll tell you how somewhere on the first screen). Do that and select your CD/DVD Rom. My sisters laptop I'm working on has that as the initial device but for some reason it ignores it. Use that menu to tell it to boot from the disk.

Did that already it says loading like it's going to load the cd then it boots the vista os and goes into the bsod with volsnap.sys as the issue

Try holding down F11 (or whatever key it is) right after the computer starts and see if there is the Toshiba Recovery Wizard that comes up. Might give you the option to format. Almost sounds like the recovery disks put something or detect something on the drive so they don't run a second time. Format and try again.

Re: finding a reboot disc

ok so i have gone thru all the steps i know to do. I've ran thru the Function keys at the top, ran the boot disc from all ways possible. My next question... is it possible to format the hard drive without running the operating system as i cant get it to boot and without getting that silly cd i paid for to run? Because currently nothing is working. getting exausted with this stupid computer all because 1 driver doesnt want to work. Thanks for all the help so far it is greatly appreciated!

If you have access to a computer with a CD-Burner you can download Kubuntu, Ubuntu, or just about any Linux distro and burn to CD. Most will run a "live" version without having to install anything. From there you can format the hard drive. If you can get that far, I (or others) should be able to easily guide you step by step on how to format the drive.

If you have data that you need to save I would run SpinRite on it for starters,at the very least remove the drive to install as a slave drive in another computer and run scandisk on it and select the scan surface area as one of the scan options. If SpinRite will not recognize the drive then you are looking at data recovery by the specialists if you need anything that is on the drive.Ron G

I wouldn't format a HD over a bad driver - just replace it. I think I remember the info (link) that I gave you discusiing replacement. Get an uncorrupted copy off another computer and copy/replace it to yours.

That's going to be easier said then done for him because he won't have access to the Windows Recovery Console. Stupid OEM recovery disks. I'm going to bet because he has already run the recovery CDs once, the drive has already been formatted once, so formatting again is going to do nothing but take up some extra time. I just can't understand why the disks won't run a second time. It's like they mark the drive to prevent it for some reason.

True, if the C: partition is formatted and the D: partition is corrupted, about the only thing that is going to "save" him is a set of recovery disks or a fresh install.

Right, but that's the issue right now. He ran the OEM recovery disks that he purchased and ended up with the good old Blue Screen of Death after a fresh install. Now when he runs the disks, they get bypassed and can't do anything else, which is weird. They should be allowing another fresh install but for some reason aren't. My guess is they marked the disk with a file somewhere.

Exactly, Ive got my girlfriends laptop here so i can research stuff. I bought the computer with the original vista on it. Then it crashed and i needed to get online so i got my gfs laptop and burned a copy of Ubuntu 9.10 i think it is. And formatted the hard drive with just the single disc from the set because i couldnt find both, and installed ubuntu. Now after wanting to run some programs that i need windows for such as itunes for my iphone, i have to go back to the unreliable vista. I had to resort to getting a prepaid card to buy the stupid windows recovery discs. (keeping away from credit and debit cards as much as possible) and have come to the issues i have now.

Well, if you like what you see in Ubuntu (although I like Kubuntu [I'm a KDE fan boy]), download the installers or use the disks for the applications you want to use and run them using Wine (you might have to install Wine). More often then not it should work.

If you absolutely need to use Windows, now that the drive is formatted, try your disks again.

Re: finding a reboot disc

Have you re-done all of that though for a second time or are you still on your first fresh install with the new disks?

Get into your BIOS keep hitting F2 key after your hit the power button....keep hiting it till the BIOS loads .....once there change the screens till you get to the one with cd hard drive order....change the order to CD first boot and disable the harddrive save your changes and exit......then run your your live cd....Knoppix is great for recovering files download a copy of it ...live cd .....after all is done go back to your bios and enable the hard drive again

Re: finding a reboot disk

Went thru the same hoops with my son's Toshiba and Vista. Bought the disks and they didn't work so contacted Timbuktu again and after many many arguments they agreed to send a free set of replacement disc's.

Well these didn't work either so after searching google found out this was a small known quirk with my computer series and they were sorry but it was out of warranty. Decided to load XP pro and after searching long and hard found all the drivers needed from similar models produced before the cram vista down your throat period.

Long story short will never buy another Toshiba period. And that goes for the cheap hard drives they produce which I replace on my multifunction copiers on a regular basis.
