Folks,

I have finally finished all the topside paint, I used Petit Easypoxy (it was pretty easy). I am ready to start drilling holes and mounting hardware, should start this weekend.

Here is the whole project.

Thanks everyone for all their help, I can smell the Gulf from here (must be low tide).

Peace.

Ed.

Re: Finished topside.

I can't wait to be retired and have all this time on my hands. I'm going to drive around and find cheap old boats to rebuild. I'll keep this thread for motivation. What an inspiration! Damn it looks good! You should name her "If You Only Knew". Thanks for keeping us updated!

Very clean and thourgh job congrat's, why the switch from Interlux to Petite? May i also ask do you by chance know the drying time that should occur prior to getting the boat wet?

I've read several threads now stating a 7 day drying time?(prior to launching) Is this factual or just good measure kind of thing?

I like the clean look of the transom, but did you forgot rod holder holes for a reason?

Re: Finished topside.

Fisherman.., Marks.., alheim,

I appreciate very much your comments.

Studly...,

Yea that red tide smell, last year out in the channel was loaded with dead stuff washing around. I hear we should do better this year. Thanks for the feedback.

Purduebarry,

Not retired yet, as a result, 6 Years! Started April 2000.

Tail_gunner,

I had already purchased the easypoxy (1 gal) and was going to do the whole boat with it, including outside hull. After reading (mostly on this forum), it seemed that the Interlux Perfection (two part) was a better choice for the hull (much longer discussion). So I guess now we will see how each holds up. If I had to do it again, I think I would use the perfection, although it requires a little more thought, mixing paint and thinning correctly. I think they both spread and flow pretty well. Easy poxy was certainly easier. I do think that the perfection is a much harder finish.

On drying time, I have heard many opinions, from three days to 2 weeks. I was satisfied with the hardness and feel after 1 week, so I flipped it over back on the trailer. This also fit in very well with a weekend project. I kept being reminded not to push it and mess up something I had spent so much time on. The spec sheet on perfection also said if you needed to fix sags and drips you needed to do it within 48 hours. This says to me that it is set well and hard after that time.

Woody20,

I am not sure where I am going to put the rod holders yet. I am thinking I want to see how everything "feels" before I mount it all. Things like, I would like a small swim deck on the back. We do go out to the island (Three Rooker and Anclote off of Klosterman Bayou, St. Joseph sound). Plus, my wife likes to just go slow and explore the spoil islands here, so I need to consider that as well.

Thanks again to all of you. This certainly is getting near the end and I am sure without some of the reading I have done here, things would be different (worse).

Peace.

Ed.

Re: Finished topside.

Ed, I know about the retired...I used this reference because I don't want mine to drag 6 years! Just think about how quickly you could have done it if you were.

That's okay, this boat will surely be around when you do retire and only require general cleaning. I know I probably read it but what will you power her with? She's worthy of a new motor!

Re: Finished topside.

Purduebarry,

I have a few years to go yet before I can fish all day, unless I hit the Lottery :) I plan on having her that long as you said. Knowing what I know now, I am sure the next one (hope wife is not reading posts) would take a lot less time. This certainly has been a great learning experience for me. It is hard to count man hours, I would guess about 160/year so about 1000 hours give or take.

I purchased a 2006 Suzuki 140, new controls, guages, tank, etc. The motor is sitting in the crate on the back porch yelling at me :) I purchased the motor (got a great deal) last November, so the 6 year warranty is only going to get me a 5 year and 3 month benefit if I hit my mid July target, oh well.

Peace.

Ed.

Re: Finished topside.

Bigbad...,

Going to add some color, not sure where yet. at least some stripes on the side and rub rail. The only original parts I am putting back on are the windshield and one inspection hatch that I salvaged, everything else was junk for the most part and has long since been disposed of.

I will repaint the trim on the windshield and make it look nice before I install. Also have a (as mentioned above) brandy new Suzuki 140 4 stroke (2006) and all the fixins.

I am making a parts list now, cleats, rub rail, navigation lights, hatches (have purchased new ones already), etc.

I have set a budget of $1,500 to finish the rest of the package. I am going with Hydraulic steering, bimini and a long list that may not all make it on the initial launching.

I hope there is room on my credit card :) As it turns out my father offered a gift to help with the fitting out, so I am trying to think of what would be appropriate, maybe a portable live well, since this will be dual purpose.

Thanks again guys.

Peace.

Ed.

Outstanding job Ed! I got tired just looking at the pics. :D

Every used boat buyer should see your restoration before considering to buy that boat with "the harmless little soft spot" in the floor.

spots

Ed, when your wife calls you for dinner, does she always find you sitting in your boat dreaming and drinking?

Re: Finished topside.

Bigbad...,

No I haven't but I will now, thanks much. I have a receipt from the Marine Dealer that sold me the motor and a coupon for 10% off on most things at West Marine. I was told to get their "special orders" phone number and give them a list to see what they can do. I am trying to find least expensive prices, and am not going to crazy, ie: not getting popup cleats, windless(sp?), etc..!

I live on the west coast getting pouned today by Alberto, we really need the rain.

CN...,

Havn't used boat buyer, hoping this is the last boat for a little while at least.

Woody20,

Not yet, once helm is in she may find me making motor noises, bbbbbbrrrrmmmmmm, brrrrrrmmmm :)

DJ,

Thank you very much, trying to keep some humility. Graciously accepting complements was never one of my strong points. Friends keep telling me to stop pointing out all the flaws. I am proud of the accomplishment so far and have learned so much, that may be something I am more proud of.

Peace.

Ed.

Re: Finished topside.

Ed,
great looking boat--it's been a long project, eh!

I was looking at the specs on the Interlux Perfection paint, it said for above water uses. you paited your hull with that same paint, would it survive underwater? i'm doing repairs on my boat right now and will be paiting it soon, so any insight would be great. thanks.
