High octane gas in a low compression engine burns smoky and sooty. So does SeaFoam.

A little wet and a little dark is normal. If it gets too dry, it'll overheat and melt down a piston.

Try running ordinary gas, (going from 87 to 91 to avoid ethanol is OK) and ordinary oil, your choice, run it hard if it's happy doing that, but don't push it if it balks, somethings wrong. Then take another look.

The way to use SeaFoam is to mix up about a gallon of fuel (with oil if needed) in a pony tank, add a can of SeaFoam, and run it through the engine. Do it on the muffs. It's hard enough on the engine without trying to make power. Have spare plugs on hand, and be prepared to deal with angry neighbors if the wind is their way. I run most of it through, then kill the engine by spraying SeaFoam in the carbs. Then I let it sit for awhile. Then I fire it up on it's normal fuel, and clean it out. Usually I just put in a set of new plugs, but you can just replace any that fouled.

hope it helps

Ok I have no idea of what your motor is, but if its dieing going into gear, your mechanic is off, find a new one, if he is saying its good.
I'd vote carb, idle mixtures not rich enough, or the idles set to low,or the floats miss adjusted.
The carbons from running the seafoam I suspect.
Johns posted the correct procedure for using it. Maybe some in the last seasons gas, so you can stablize the fuel over the off season, but don't run it in every tank.

ok i got the new plugs with the arm on them, drug out the horse troth and filled it up put it in gear it hesitated alittle so on my mixture screws i screwed all the way in and backed out 1 and 1/2 turns and adjusted the about a 1/8 of a turn out at a time until it sounded good to me.i think the top is out 1 and 3/4 and the bottom is out a full 2 turns, now i put it in gear and its doing fine in the water troth if it trys to die just give it a little gas and it does good i can back it all the way off and it still runs :):)lets just hope it does it in the river.

Just my 2 cents,be careful on your choice of spark plugs I was told by the merc guru that if you dont have the correct plug concerning the heat factor that the plug will burn at can and will damage these motors.I personally choose the NGK no gap plugs and have worked well.Happy Boating...
