if you decide to repair rather than replace the burnt wireing, make sure to solder, clean any paste residue, and heat shrink it. i like to use rtv silicone and then slide the heat shrink over the connection before heating.....just to make sure no water can corrode the connection.

You can use a jumper cable and go directly to the positive post on the starter. Doing that will bypass all of the starting circut.

Took the starter off. Opened it up and cleaned it out a bit. It's a pain-in-the-arse to take the darn starter off btw. Turned the key on for a few secs and it turned the motor over. I tried it a second time and nothing. had a friend tap on the starter while i turned the key and it sporadically tried to turn the
motor over.

My friend's cousin(chopper pilot/mechanic) tested the starter w/ meter and said it's getting 12.6V to the starter. He seems to think I can open it up and clean out the starter and it may work. He thinks that maybe that something is binding the starter.

Any of this sound logical?

If it is getting 12.6 volts to the starter when you turn the key to start, you either have a ground problem or an internal starter problem.

When I took the starter motor off, we put power to it and it spun fast. It wasn't attached to the starter gear(the gear with the spring).
Tomorrow I'm going to take off the starter again and try it with the both pieces of the starter together.

Update: Took the starter off....AGAIN and cleaned it up. Seems like one of the brushes was a bit stuck in it's housing. Reassembled and put it back on the motor. Bingo! Now it turns the motor over just fine.
Now on to my next problem. I primed the fuel tank and tried to fire the motor. No luck. Pulled a plug and it was dry. I found a leak at the back of the carb. A plug(I assume it's a welch plug) is tilted in the hole and is leaking fuel.

Going to take off the carbs later tonight to see if I can get the plug to seat back in the hole.

Also, going to check compression. Can someone please explain how to do this? I read somewhere here that you can fry the ignition if done improperly. I just took out both plugs on my 35hp and hit the starter a couple times to get the comp on that motor, but from what I've read I could have damaged the ignition.

That old 80 has the earlier style points and condensor style ignition. If you unhook the main lead from the coil, you should be just fine. Pull all the plugs and crank it over about 5 times, wide open and you should get a correct compression reading.

Good to know. The throttle was only in the "Start" position when I comp tested my other motor (Bigtwin 35hp) and I got 90psi....is it safe to assume that the compression on that motor is quite a bit higher then?

Some say you should check compression with the throttle wide open, I check compression with the throttle at the idle position. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Got it. Lots of work left to get this motor running. With the starter now working...at least I'll be able to test spark and compression.

This little aluminum disc fell out of the back of the carb(and another one is tilted in it's hole and leaking fuel). What is it?

Hopefully they'll just pop back in.

You can try, but if they were installed improperly the first time, they will not fit back in and seal properly.

What happens if they won't seal? Can I buy replacement plugs?

You can buy replacement plugs, though you'll need to find somebody that still has them in stock. I mentioned a guy in an earlier post who has the plugs. I know because I too needed them. I started a thread concerning those plugs at one point. Search for the thread and you'll get some more info on installing the plugs. The plugs also come with a carb rebuild kit and I believe that the kit is available for you motor right here at iboats. However, if the motor has been well-cared for as you mentioned in your 1st post, a carb rebuild may not be necessary and would only add unnecessary time and money. Otherwise, you could simply use the two plugs from the kit and shelve the rest, though that may not be the best financial decision either.

By the way, those plugs cover holes in the carb body. After a carb is cast, holes must be drilled to allow fuel to flow within the various circuits of the carb (high-speed circuit and low-speed circuit). Sometimes, the only way to open up an internal passageway for fuel flow is to drill into the carb from the outside. Once the passageway is created inside the carb, the external hole must be covered to keep fuel from leaking out.

Just got a quote from Laing's of $60 plus shipping for 4 plug wires(w/ screw in ends) and the coil wire. Is this a fair price? Seems a bit steep to me.

UPDATE: Took off carbs today and cleaned them well. Everything looked pretty good inside, but I ran wire into all orifices etc to make sure nothing had crud in it.

I also managed to pop the welch plugs back in. I cut a pencil off square and used it to pound the plugs back in. So far, no leaks.

I also replaced the coil wire and a couple plug wires. Now for the good part (drum roll, please)........

I hooked up a portable gas tank, pumped the bulb, and turned the key. She fired up in under a second, and idles even and smooth! :D:D:D

I popped open the lower drain screw on the foot and fluid was very milky:( I ran a magnet in the oil and found NO metal, so that's a positive. Also, I'm guessing that the impeller needs to be replaced caused I didn't see much water coming out. I've got to drop the LU to see what's going on in there.

Overall, I'm please as all heck right now. Should be able to drop her in the water soon :D
