Re: My 1972 MFG Sprint

When I sanded the hull I found & repaired 2 stree cracks near the front of the bow, the rest of the hull looked great!

I then buffed out the top blue gelcoat with some boat scrub and WOW just like the 70's

I didnt want to put the beat up old wooded raile on it so I decided to make new ones from oak and resin coat them, they came out GREAT!

Re: My 1972 MFG Sprint

I put in the new carpet and decided to upgrade the speakers, the old set up had one 4 x 9 speaker under the seat , it was blown and rotted, I put in new seats and didnt want to cut speaker holes in them, so I cut the holes in the side panel, and I picked up 2 brand new pioneer door speakers for a car , at 100 watts each for $10 off ebay

They work fine and are far louder than I will ever have them

I just like to keep it low so only we can hear it, so being on the floor its easy to hear it when sitting down

I kept the old original radio though, works like a dream

also here are some pictures of the cavity under the front bow, it was a 3 foot area empty , my boat now has 2 outboards & an electric trolling motor on the back and the transom is heavy, so the bow was light, I decided to add the surplus foam I had left over to even the weight

I stripped the trailer, sanded it and gave it 5 full coats of rusteoulm paint
I changed the trailer lights, including marker lights, changed the winch to handle some extra weight, changed all rollers from bow to keel, new plate frame, and changed bunks

very happy with the trailer

then I put some decals on it and replaced the boat name decal

added a marine radio & antenna

& the electric motor with a small mount I got from bass pro shops for $15

I had this electric in my garage for 15 years, it comes in handy when I want to move the boat a few feet without firing up an outboard

Re: My 1972 MFG Sprint

While I was working on this boat I sent the outboards in for tune ups and new props

When the boat was finished I WAS READY TO TEST HER OUT!

I took her to Lake Erie port of Conneaut on a calm day and launched her, I was happy with the way she sits now, she is heavier but definatly more sturdy, I was able to jump down into the boat and feel the solid glassed in 3/4 deck

Solid as a rock, I wouldn't of dreamed of doing that before

I fired her up and let her rip. before my maximum speed was 35 mph, now after added weight of new bigger fuel tanks , electric motors, thicker deck , 3 x the foam it originally had , another battery , and loaded down with gear Im almost hitting 40 mph!

I guess before it was flopping through the water again like a wet noodle, now its rigid and wants to fly

very very happy with the job, and proud I did it myself

I got a few comments on the ramp that made me feel good about, a couple old timers asked me how I kept it so clean and told me how they remember owning one 40 years ago

Yes! Another MFG saved from the land fill! What a great job you did. Pretty neat that it polished out so nice. That color blue gel coat defined boats at one time. A true classic!

Re: My 1972 MFG Sprint

Just thought I would swing back after almost 7 years and update on this MFG , which I gave a MAJOR overhaul with great help from this board..... anyhow 7 years later..... The boat is still in great shape , never saw a night out of the garage, has been towed to Florida 5 or 6 times and fished the Gulf of Mexico , all over Lake Erie from my home port of Conneaut over to and all around the Islands! Not to mention our countless trips to our small inland lakes here in NE Ohio.

I am now begining a job on a bigger boat , and decided not to sell my old MFG! Its staying right in the garage where the floor will stay dry!
