Re: First Boat~Wet Foam?
chips have you orderded your glass yet?
ive just been doing some catch up on here and your stringer glass to beer to resin ratio looks a little off...
i would try to get some 1708....it will make your life a lot easyer. use unwaxed laminating resin.
first of all.....yes bed them in structural peanut butter.......tabb them in place with a thin layer of csm...it just has to be in small sections of the stringer......thats just to get them to stand up for you so you can apply pressure to the roller when you glass them.
ok.....so lets pretend the stringers are standing up....bedded and the every 3 foot or so 6 inch tabbs are cured........
now......your using poly....so you need csm.....lay a layer of csm all the way up the stringer and 3 ins on the hull.......then lay your, cloth product over the same area.......at that time.....when its layed...the air is out and its curing.....thats when its time to apply the corona.....depending on temps and cure time....you might have time to apply 2.
ok....so now the glass is partially cured....hard and not too tacky......now repeat the process with another layer of csm and the thin cloth except this time run the csm 4-6 ins from the bottom of the stringer ....so you overlap the last layer by 2 ins......
(again...2 more inches contacting the hull)...(dont gorget to ruff and scuff the hull.....vaccume and clean with aceitone....actually id go about 4 times with aceitone at the stringer instlation stage)
the big 1708 would save you a lot of glassing as it just needs a tabbing layer and a final layer and done.....
remember.....resin builds internal heat when curing....so two layers is all you can apply at a time..(or it will get too hot and become brittle and weak)..after the two layers are down ....thats when its "beer o clock" and only till the glass begins to stiffen......you want to apply the next layer just as it gets stiff.....that will give you a chemical bond between the layers.
as far as your earlyer question about the under side of the deck......you cant just resin it....you have to glass it......resin by it self would be ok...
IF it didnt get brittle and crack.......so you must use a thin layer of csm.
dont get freekin carried away and do a triple layup veil, woven, matt, matt, bi ax, kinda thingy......just a thin layer of csm.....
but remember....when water proofing a peice of wood....the procedure is....wet wood using cold cure resin....(mixed at the lower end of the allowable spectrum)......apply several coronas while the resin is curing...(it is also soaking into the wood......when the resin is allmost hard....then apply the layer of csm.....add more resin to saturate the glass....not too much....not to little.
as far as the peanut butter on the deck joint.....yup...oops super dooper peanut butter....(the structural kind).......make it a smooth gradual joint so it will be east to glass to and not cause air bubbles.
now....reading your posts ....you seen to be missing some information on glassing......
when you use poly resin, you have to remember.....it is brittle by it self.....
put a very thin layer on some wax paper....then put another thin layer and add csm....basically glass the wax paper......
when its cured....you will see the csm is very stiff and strong, while the resin by it self...is so brittle you can crush it like a dryed leaf in fall.
now....when you apply resin to a substraight...(say your stringer wood)....it too is brittle until you add glass......if you add a cloth type product (with no csm)....there is a thin layer of resin between the substraight and cloth.....just like the resin on the wax paper....that is how strong it is !!!
in all poly applications you need csm to bond the sub straight and cloth.
this is a law of poly resin.....it cannot be broken.
(this rule does not apply with epoxy)
the csm fills the resin rich layer between the substraight and cloth ...bonding the two.....
remember......because of the heat build up...you can only apply 2 layers....then you have to wait till it starts to cure....and the heat dissapates....even if you cant feel it....the heat is there
so think about it this way....apply 2 layers....apply 2 corona...apply another 2 layers.....another 2 corona.
by the way chips.....on the pic of the engine stand up side down ...(last pic posted)....ive noticed a major porblem......!
on the wall beside the lynard skinnard poster....you have two insporational posters.......the one is fine.....but there is far far too much glare in the second poster
cheers bud
