OK, This is my fisrt boat, It's a 1985 17 foot Cimmaron with an 1985 force 85 horse motor. Model 856X5L , Heres the deal. Motor sat for 2 summers and was winterized and fogged before storage. I got it took it to the my local mech where he found a bad stator. burned and replaced. Motor runs starts good but had trouble in the low to mid rpm range. If you could get it to throttle up to full it would be good, but getting it there with out it slowly bogging and dieing was sometimes a challenge. It does seem to run very smooth, no stutters or jumps in the upper rpm range. It did have about 1 gallon of gas that was left in the tank from last year with stabilizer and I added 9 gallons and 1 and a half of penzoil synthetic oil. Is that one gallon of left over going to ruin the whole new stuff? and cause the problem? or am I going to have to have the carbs tore down and cleaned? Is there a treatment that might help or would it do more harm than good? I have read posts about things not to use but there is some dissagreement on decarbing. Does decarbing help the carbs? or is it just for carbon build up in motor? Lots of questions I know, but you guys are the most complete knowledgable place I have found for information anywhere. Thanks for that!!!

Chris

'mornin' CD,

"Decarb" is just for removing carbon build-up from pistons, rings etc. It wont do a "thing" for the carborator(s) though.

Did the mechanic run a compression check? IF not, get it done. Once you have confidence that the motor is mechanically sound (100+ psi on each cylinder and all readingf within 10% of each other) then, go ahead and service (remove, clean, rebuild with carb-kit) the carbs.

from here it sounds like your carbs might be a bit "cruddy"

let us know what you find.

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!

Chris,
Decarbing is to clean the cyl. of carbon. That does not sound like it is your problem. When you added the gas and oil, was it mixed well before putting it into the tank? The one gallon left over from last season should not have caused a problem if it was treated and the motor ran so treated gas was throughout the system. It sounds as though you may have tried to mix what you added by just putting it into the tank, and if you did that would let oil settle and get sucked into the system. If that is true you will have to clean the system. If that is not the what you did you may have to clean the system anyway. Or you may have an electrical problem.

Klondike, Yeah the mech did compression test and checked every thing out. compression was 120-120-122. He said that was good and that motor looked sounded and clean from what he could see on the outside. He asked me if we wanted to look at the carbs and I just didnt have the money to have em worked over. I guess he takes em and tears them down , boils out and rebuulds. 50 buck a carb. sound resonable? plus the 20 bucks a kit and your talking a bunch of money 150 plus 60 looking at 210 for the job? that with in range?
I have taken the fuel filter off and cleaned and it had small sediment in the housing. does that mean I should probably drain tank and clean it out? anyway its gonna have to sit for a couple of weeks till I get some extra money. But I am interested in reworking the carbs myself. I do all maintenence on my vehicles, oil, brakes, tranny service, that kind of think but im out of my comfort zone on an outboard. Thanks for your help guys I appreciate it. along with any other suggestions.

Hi CD outboards are just engines tuned on there side & attached via a center section to a very basic gearbox. There is nothing scary in them if you get a MANUAL.You obviously have some mechanical knowledge so get a MANUAL & clean/rebuild the carbs yourself. If you have found dirt/deposits in the fuel system i would suggest that throwing away a few gallons of gas & cleaning the tank will be cheaper & less time consuming in the long run.Oh & did I mention get a MANUAL :)

So, should I get a manual? hheheeheh Yeah I will get me one, I am going to the library on monday and see if they have one for the motor and then if they dont ill see about buying one. I am looking at a parts page and they list 2 kits under carbs, gasket kit, rapair kit, AND theres another page for a float valve and reapair kit, which one am I gonna need? So let me ask this for myself, Spraying carb cleaner through a running outboard is not a good idea or is ok under careful use?????. Thanks again guys.

Spraying carb cleaner does nothing for the internal workings of the carb, such as the jets and floats. It may or may not help with the external mechanical parts.

Depending on the ingredients of the cleaner, and amount used, it could do damage to the inner workings of the motor.

Thanks to all for advice. UPADTE!!!! Cleaned the spark plugs throughly and DID NOT use any carb cleaner. I will get a set of plugs and replace them as well, but it ran good enough to be new today. I wanted to get this thing cleaned out by running it. and so we did. had one issue shortly after launching with it bogging after coming down from throttle. but then I ran her for 40-45 straight minutes opened up and she ran with out one single hicup for the rest of the day (about 6 hours). I even got to help tow in a bayliner. hheheeh and she did that great!! I owe you guys a Ton for your knowledge and I am thrilled to now be a boat owner. Its addictive and the kids are HOOKED!!!

Thanks to all

Chris

I mix my fuel 16 OZ. of oil to 6.25 gallon of gas.
This is a true 50:1 mixture.
Mixing 16 OZ of oil to 6 gallon of gas is only 48:1 mixture.
Pick up a calculator.
Mine runs better like this.
Good Luck.
