Kidding aside, modern medicine can do wonders with diseases and conditions would have been a death sentance not too many years ago. Early diagnosis and the proper treatment seems to be the key. I'll agree that some of the tests are invasive and embarassing and can personally tell you that checking for bladder cancer is no fun whatsoever!

Well, he used the contraption that took 12 hunks of flesh out of the prostate with 18 tries. If you ever had one, you know they are spring loaded pricks that gather samples of your prostate. Apparently the tool they used was not sufficiently sanitized... at least that was the story I got from the head nurse...

OK, I get it. You're not talking about the standard finger wave this thread is really all about.

Two friends of mine have experienced this routine and it occurs when they are pretty certain you have prostate cancer and they want to confirm the other tests and evaluate the extent. Both of them said they didn't like it.

I definitely would not go back to a place that admits they don't clean equpment that is routinely sent up peoples' bung holes.

Many women are afraid of their first mammogram, but there is no need to worry. By taking a few minutes each day for a week preceding the exam and doing the following exercises, you will be totally prepared for the test! Best of all, these simple exercises can be done at home.

Exercise 1
Open your refrigerator door and insert one breast in the door. Have one of your strongest friends slam the door shut and lean on it for good measure. Hold that position for 5 seconds. Repeat with other breast.

Exercise 2
Visit your garage at 3am when the temperature of the cement floor is just perfect. Remove your clothes and lie comfortably on the floor with one breast wedged under the rear tire of the car. Ask a friend to slowly back up the car until your breast is sufficiently flattened and chilled. Turn over and repeat for the other breast.

Exercise 3
Freeze two metal bookends overnight. Strip to the waist. Invite a stranger into the room. Press the bookends against one of your breasts. Ask the stranger to smash the bookends together as hard as they can. Set an appointment with the stranger to meet next year and do it again.

You are now properly prepared!

now why did you have to go and do that, it'll take me ages to clean the tea i spat out with laughter on my keyboard! :p

I've gotten all the exams over the years. None of them are as bad as I thought they would be. The one I remember most was the first. The doc didn't explain that hemmaroids could be internal. He got me to bend over the table for what I thought was going to be an external exam. When he went in, I went over the table and felt very offended. He then explained all about what was happening and talked me into coming back around the table. I now only use docs that have small hands.

What you had is not a prostate exam but a biopsy of the prostate. You must have had a high PSA and they were searching for cancer. To do your procedure they pierce through the bowel into the prostate and it is not uncommon to get an infection. That is why a normal procedure is to give you anti-biotics before and after the procedure.

I had the same procedure done and it is hell.

You're right... I had high PSA... the anti-biotics I took before and afterward were apparently not strong enough to overcome the bacteria I had...

I've had the exam a couple of times. But I don't remember walking away with a smile. I walked away smoking a cigarette, back in the day when I smoked. ;)

is that the standard amount of samples to take for biopsy? i've not needed a biopsy of anything before, i'd imagined it was only one or two sampls that were taken.

Pretty standard with the prostate since there are two lobes. I know way too much about this because I had a cancer scare.

Yes, from what my doctor said... He had to have 12 good samples but it took him 18 tries... I do not ever want to do that again...

I have the exams still, had the biopsy luckily with no side effects, then the radiation treatments for 25 weeks and after that they put in 90 some odd radiactive seeds in my prostate. That was 6 years ago and so far so good. I a glad that I had not heard of Doug's problems prior to that, I had no worries other than the C word, never thought about getting an infection from it. There were a lot of us hoping and praying for Doug when he had his problem a few years back on another forum CSR that we are on.

And don't sweat the upper endoscopy. I have had it yearly for the last 5-6 years. They use propofol (Diprivan). It knocks you out instantly and brings you back just as quick. First time I was afraid of nausea and being sick. But it didn't happen. I had my wife stop so I could get a cheeseburger and fries on the way home. Once i looked at my watch just before I went to sleep and again when I woke up - 4 minutes. Same experience with the actual colonoscopy, but it took about 20 minutes. Prep the night before is the aggravating part of that.

Yep - same stuff they used last time on me. I have never slept better in my life. The doc chewed me out after for threatening to shoot the nurse if she tried to wake me up again.

cheers,
knowing the procedure only lasts 3 minutes i kinda thought they wouldn't knock me out to the same extent as if i was having a major op. I was given the option of no anaesthesia, but have heard it can be really uncomfortable.
They've warned me of possible throat pain afterwards, do you get any?

May i ask what it is you have yearly endoscopies for? i've been suffering with major indigestion, nausea and hunger pains which they think may be an ulcer hence the endoscopy to confirm. I've been reading up that once you have had an ulcer you're more likely to get them again.
