I'm a first timer and got an old boat (Seabreeze tri-hull) with Chrysler 55HP engine. I have been working on engine for the past week and got it running although not smoothly tuned. Family has been bugging me so we decided to give it a try this morning.

We went to a lake launching ramp. I still can't manage a trailer and the boat completed blocked the central rear view mirror. I was backing this whole thing like a giant dinosaur without a head. Finally got the rear of the boat into the water and hitted a deep hole. I figured out the I didn't raise the motor. The guy sold me the boat didn't give me the pin for holding the motor while it is tilted. I decided to pull everything out of the water. Then I found myself stuck in sand. A goodhearted boater pulled me out with his truck. I then found some water in the rear drain so I unplugged it and let it drain and the Walmart plug broke and would not hold tight. I decided to call it a day so I pulled off the parking lot after thanking the helper. The whole family drove to a nearby bait shop and was wandering. Then we met another good hearted boater who let me have a piece of metal for holding the engine while it is raised. He also let me have his old drain plug (although old but much better than the Walmart brand). We thank him so we headed back the ramp and tried again. We met the first helper back and he said the water is too shallow and he is leaving. He was also having problem getting his boat back to the trailer too and I helped him to drive his truck back and forth to get the boat. Then we met a park ranger who told us that there are lots of deep holes so he directed us to use one that seems to be the best. He helped us to get the boat into the water. So I parked the trailer and the 4 of us got into the boat. We put life vest on and I started the engine. I let it warmed up for a few minutes. Then put in N then reverse, engine stopped. Restarted engine, same thing happened for a few more times. Then I couldn't start the engine at all. I finally got the engine to start, put in reverse and back the boat out for another 30 feet of so. Engine died again. Now I couldn't start the engine. After I was able to start the engine again, the current already blew us back close to shore and the propella stuck in sand. The four of us were like fools and I was the big daddy fool trying to get the family back to shore. Finally, we all decided to get wet to save ourselves. We jumped into water and pushed the boat back to ramp. I got the trailer and after 15 or 20 times back and forth, finally got the trailer straight enough to let the boat get in. We finally managed to put the boat back to the trailer, tied it up and went home.

After we parked in the driveway, I looked at the trailer and wondered what is that pulling handle with a return spring for. I also wondered why there is a short piece of chain hanging next to it. Then all of a suddern, I realized that was a tilting mechanism to release the boat into the water and the chain is to stop it from tilting too high. Not to mention I have some damage on the propeller.

I learned it is best to have a trolling motor. I learned to have a spare plug. I learned the battery needs to be secured or it will dropped into the hole at the back of the boat. I learned not to wear jeans. I learned to have spare clothes in the car. I learned to have a section of 10' PVC pipe with ends capped to get me out of stuck situations. I have learned more beyond all these.......

Wasn't it fun ? Can someone tell me where I can get into a boating school? Oh, I think I need to get to a trailer driving school first.:(

Cheers.

backing the trailer, put your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel if you want the trailer to go left, move your hand to the left, if you want it to go right, move hand to right. go to the shopping center early in the morning, or after closing, and practice. don't over steer. google coast guard auxillary for boating classes. sometimes you will meet a friend there, that will help you along.

Well at least you tried!!!

It will become easier the more you get out there and boat! In no time you will be out there with the family having the time of your life.

Sounds like you really need to figure out that engine. What have you done to it thus far?

I would recommend a new impeller first and foremost; it is an easy install, and can save the motor. A set of plugs and wires will go a long way on an old motor as well.

Is there fresh gas in the boat? I would imagine the carbs need a thorough cleaning, and it sounds as if you may have a leaky fuel pump.

You need a good primer bulb on the fuel line, and pump it up until it is hard before you start the motor. If it is stalling, have someone pump the bulb while it is running to see if it keeps it from stalling out; if it does, then you will need to rebuild the fuel pump. Again, this is a fairly simple task.

Good luck with your boating project! Keep practicing the backing of the trailer and it will soon become second nature.

Re: First time boating total disaster today.

Unless you have boated with an experienced boater and paid close attention you gotta start from zero, AC. Not only is that embarrassing, it can also be deadly dangerous. You got lucky today.

Find an experienced boater among your friends and acquaintances and ask him/her to go along for a few trips to coach you.

Also, read and remember the tips for new boaters posted at the top of this forum.

Better luck next time. :)

Re: First time boating total disaster today.

Too bad your first outing turned out to be a bad experience. The lesson you should have learned is don't go on an outing (especially a family outing) with a boat that is not ready for the water -- especially an engine that needs some work. Problems can upset the family since the day is ruined and they may feel uncomfortable wondering what will go wrong next time. A thorough inspection of the boat should have alerted you to the battery, water, plug, and other issues.

There are several things first time "trailer backers" do wrong but the single most frequent mistake I see is that they wait too long to make a steering correction. By the time a correction is made its too late and no amount of correction will straighten the rig. Other mistakes are making too much of a correction, or a correction in the wrong direction.

My heart bleeds for ya AC, especially with all the family in tow. Man should be able to look like the master of all. Ponder all the issues you described above, take heart to a lot of the suggestions offered here and next time you'll be King.;)

Sorry to hear about the ordeal. I had my first time just recently also...it went better than yours, but not without some struggles.

Power Squadron also has classes. I took the Boat Smart class, learned a bit and met a few other boaters. I would suggest it. Good luck.

Re: First time boating total disaster today.

I hate taking people with me to boat- it's like a curse. The first time I invited some good friends, my truck broke down halfway there. The second time we go to the lake and almost all the way across and the engine shut down and wouldn't restart. The third time, down on the bay the upper drive gear in the outdrive broke a tooth off and locked everything up. Another time one of the rocker studs broke off and the engine made such a terrible racket, it was embarrassing. But, you learn and you move on. I won't quit. If it wasn't for the bad times, the good times wouldn't be so very sweet.

Re: First time boating total disaster today.

Many thanks to all your support here.

I have been in the technical forum and got tips to fix up the engine. At first, it wasn't start at all. I have the carb rebuild kit done and I was able to start and idle the engine for 15 minutes in my driveway (with a full garbage can of water). I knew I wasn't quite ready since I'm ordering the fuel pump rebuild kit and it's on the way. But I thought since the engine started and idle fine (although somewhat rough), I should be able to get it on the lake as long as I can figure out how to launch the boat. Seriously, I don't want to go with the kids, especially the 8 years old (who went in and out, front and back while I was backing the trailer into the water).

Anyway, I think the problems were too many at the same time. I noticed other boaters have trolling motors to get the boat further out before they do anything. We don't have this option and a few pairs of hands paddling water won't get us anywhere offshore.

But I think I will go for a boating class first. I need one. I have also practiced backing a 5x8 trailer on the lawn using the lawn tracter. I though I have it nailed. But when I backed the boat, it was so much different !

Re: First time boating total disaster today.

You need to practice at the mall when there is nobody else around, take your time and do not panic if it goes the wrong way. being overly nervous only makes things worse. As regards the motor. Do all the maintenance / repair stuff before you go out again, find a ramp that is more forgiving for launching / recovering and if you can have a buddy with a boat out there at the same time as you in their boat so that help is at hand for the first couple of times. Keep a marine radio on board and as you say, a troling motor is a nice addition for the "just in case" scenario !!!

I have a 4HP outboard I take in my boat for emergencies. I think just having it there keeps the 85 from breaking down :)

Re: First time boating total disaster today.

for backing a trailer. i like to use only side mirrors. (i have no choice, i have a van) when backing. if ya see the trailer in the left mirror and ya want to straighten it up. turn twards its. left. if it appers in the right mirror. ya over corrected and ya need to turn twards it the other way. right. basicly if its in the right mirror, turn right to straighten, left mirror, turn left to straighten. if ya cant see it, it's behind ya and yer going straight.......just my 2 cents.....

i second or third on the uscg or power sqaudron classes. you'll learn a lot + make some new friends......

Re: First time boating total disaster today.

well, you've seen that there's actually a lot to it... when you watch someone who's good at launching etc, it looks so effortless.

A couple points:

-it sounds like you didn't have any paddles in the boat. Even though you won't be able to paddle a boat like yours for far, 2 people with paddles (1 on each side) can move it to shore if the wind/current is not too strong. Up here (Canada) it is law that every small boat have at least 1 paddle on board. Maybe that would've been enough to keep you getting wet.

-a safety issue with the kids... especially around trailers kids need to either be strapped in the tow vehicle or be well away from the rig when you're trying to back in. On the dock, with lifejackets on, and supervised by an adult is probably the best. They tend to get excited and start running all over. If they go between the boat and the tow vehicle, they're usually too short to be seen. Or, they are playing on the ramp behind the boat and not realizing that they're in danger of being backed over (and you can't see anything but boat).

-it's good that you had everyone in lifejackets on... sometimes newbies don't make everyone wear them, so good for you.

Ditto on trying to find someone to go out with you for the first time or two. Even better if they had their own boat. That way, they could help you launch and get going, but be around to give you a tow in the worst case scenario.

Good luck!

Re: First time boating total disaster today.

I'm still laughing...Sorry to hear about your crazy 1st time out...Couple of pointers:

1. Go with someone with boating experience
2. Get your engine and boat serviced/inspected by professional. A stalling motor can be dangerous especial when approaching docks, boats, people...You go to put it in reverse to slow your approach and bang.
3. Practice backing your boat up in your driveway...Start slow until your brain figures out that turning clockwise= boat goes toward drivers side.

Good luck...I may have to hit happy hour today and share this story for a few good laughs. It will get better.

About kids....I always make the kids get out of the tow vehicle and stand out of the way where I can see them. Or better let their mother corral them. Everybody out of the vehicle when backing down the ramp. Some of them are deep enough to submerge a vehicle. Assume they all are, even if you think not.

I have seen many people try to back a trailer that they couldn't see when all they had to do was open the back of their pickup or van. If you can see your wheels, it is a snap.

Re: First time boating total disaster today.

Well, the first time I took a friend boating, I managed to stall my truck right on the ramp. The fuel filter of the truck was pluged up, so it did not want to start. Being the quick witted type I am, I decide to take some gas out of the extra tank that is in the boat and just poor it into the carb to start the truck. It starts up ok with a bang and a backfire to boot. I'm happily idling my truck into the water when my friend starts jumping around and making all kinds of comotion outside the truck. He's pointing to the hood and yelling "fire" for all he's worth. Low and behold the truck is on fire - I put to much fuel in the carb, some got on the air filter and the backfire ignited it all... Now my truck is on fire, my boat is halfway in the water and all dickens is breaking loose at once. I hop out of the truck, leap into the boat and grab the brand new fire extingusher I just bought, throw the hood open to a blazing inferno and prompty empty the contents of the fire extinguisher onto my engine. Now the fire is out, but I'm stalled on the ramp with a burned truck that really dosen't want to start...

Fun for all this newbee boating is...

Very good point. I open the tailgate and fold the rear seats down all the time but did not even think to say it earlier. Makes it so much easier to know that point when the boat is going to start to float.
