Thanks this info is great I will be working on this motor as soon as the Carb kit and float arrive.

yep pretty much. Not a big need to remove it unless other parts of the carb are really dirty and corroded. I made the mistake of wathcing a you tube video on how to remove it, and instantly thought I was an expert, I almost ruined the carb drilling the plug out.

I just use an awl and hammer...center of plug at a 45 ,or so, deg. angle, pierce it completely, and pop it out...these plugs are ~1/8 " aluminum...avoid scoring the sealing area around the lip of casting that the welsh plug seals...

no real need to, HOWEVER, if the boat is still on the water make certain you block off any routes that carb nuts, washers, etc. can find their way to roll, slide, etc. from the work area. I can manage to lose them in the driveway or garage, muchless the lake.

take some pics before disconnecting anything...note the mark on the timing cam and where the carb roller strikes it when you set it in the start position < throttle plate should just begin opening >, put the motor in gear and open it to wot...the throttle plate should be horizontal in the carb throat and the carb roller on the highest part of the timing cam

Something I've been wanting to try for just that reason is a piece of window screen under the front part the engine/carb area. And also an old cookie sheet/pan. I had used towels but they often have get wrinkles in them and hide parts. Forget about magnets, most of the parts are brass and aluminum, except the nuts on the carbs.

One time I was screwing around with the high speed screw on my 4 cyl motor, and dropped the screw that was behind the fuel pump side, while I was in the bay, at night (dont ask) that was exciting. I managed to find a cap bolt of a different thread to jam in there. Always good to carry spare nuts, bolts, fuses, and a flashlight that stays on the boat. :rolleyes:

Thanks for the info i will be working on the Project this Sunday. Parts arrived Today I have a Invitatiuonal Tournament This week 4 days of Golf.

Golf is my first love. Boating and fishing are second. I am a scratch golfer and a terrible fisherman.If I had a better boat I would do More fishing. Thats why Iam trying to get this motor Running. Only the second Boat motor i have ever worked on. I Just got my grand fathers 51 Seahorse 5HP motor out of My Garage and had it runiing and out on the lake after a couple of days. Purrrrs Like a Kitten. Motor sat Unused for more than 50 years. I will working On this ASAP.

Cleaned carb today I only had one issue and that was with the low speed needle. When I removed it from the carb it has like a sleeve that the needle screws into. This sleeve is it just loose and the packing nut holds it in place? I did not see this part in the rebuild kit or on the instructions that came with the kit. I put it back in the way it came out. It seems to make it very difficult to make the final adjustments for the low idle. If I tighten the packing nut it is almost Impossible to adjust. If I back out the packing nut I can adjust the needle but I notice no change when making small adjustments while motor is running

Hi roger. The little barrel is supposed to spin free like that. You want to first thread the lo speed need into it then slip a plastic washer on to the needle, followed by a piece of the packing, the another plastics washer and finally the lo speed needle nut to snug it all down. You want it to be just tight enough so that you can adjust the needle by hand. Review the link below and scroll down about 3/4 of the way to where it says "Install Packing Washers and Nuts for High and Slow Speed Needles".

Thanks I will check my parts left over bag for those plastic washers I just put a packing washers on both sides of the barrel. That my make a difference on the adjusting?

No, the barrel goes in first, then the nylon washer, then packing, then another nylon washer, then the brass nut. The lo speed needle then passes through all of them and threads into the barrel. As you tighten the brass nut, the nylon washers and packing are "sandwiched" between the barrel and the brass nut to form an air tight seal. Use this link to help dial it in once it's reassembled.
