Well for the first time in 32 years I am not working for anyone:mad:as a self employed paint contractor I am used to having a day or two off every once in a while but I am also used to giving two estimates a night I have giving two in two weeks, well maybe it is time to look into other opportunities.I guess the sad part is I actually like what I do,even though I am not in panic state just being with nothing to do is driving me nuts.Well need to go hit the pavement :D

Re: First time in 32 years

I know the feeling (sort of) my g/f is now working nights at a hosp because her cleaning business is soooo slow. customers just aren't coming along like they used to. the up side is that she likes the work at the hospital. she may close the business all together.

Don't ya just love the cold calls/pound the pavement.

Like most contractors, I know if I do not get my name out to the prospective customers before a project happen, the work is not coming to me.

Start the pounding JIM. ;)

Nephew in Pittsburgh needs his home exterior painted. He has estimates of 12.5 and 14k so far. Wants it done before winter.

The problem here is all the new work painters have been out of jobs for a while so now they are messing with our turf and most don't have a clue:eek:

Re: First time in 32 years

my neighbor is a paint contractor, he works a 40 hr gig and does houses on his own, he works 7 days a week and must work at least 12-14 hour days, and he's still scraping by it seems. Too many people out that that will get 5 guys to shotgun a job and be happy with a couple hundred bucks each out there I guess.

You left it a bit late in life didn't you?:p
After 35 yrs running businesses I just sold out and took a great job, well paying with all the benefits...weekends off.!
I've been working 7 days a week for the past 12 years.

I don't remember the last time I had a vacation and like you 7 days a week is the norm but we will see it might be my time to look at some other things. But on the upside we will be going to the lake in a couple of weeks.

same thing here, the builders and their guys are all building nothing so they pretend to be remodelers, undercut us, and end up screwing up the houses because they only know how to build new junk, not remodel old well built stuff.
