First off. Boat is a 1981 searay v197. 3.8L 800 stringer drive

Question 1.

If I put the boat in reverse and rev it up a little the drive comes up into trailer position. Not sure if that is normal with these drives.

Question 2.

WOT 3500 rpm 32 mph. 19 pitch prop. 2 adults 4 small kids. What would change it to what it should be.

Question 1.

I don't think any drives are supposed to do that. Does the drive stay up when trailering?

Question 2.

Smaller props allow motors to turn more RPMs but understanding the real cause is important. If that is the real cause then go for it, but are you sure the tach is reading correctly? Is the motor running right otherwise?

Also to get it out of gear I have to move it back past the lock position to get it to neutral.

One more thing it was hard to get it to shift to reverse

You have two different things going on. First there is something going on with your tilt system. It is most likely in the clutch pack in the tilt housing. You did not say but I assume you are able to raise and lower the drive with the toggle switch? If so, that indicates that the motor and shaft are intact.

Your shifting problem is most likely due to a mis-adjusted shift convert vs the cable from the throttle/shift control. There instructions in the manual as to how to check/adjust it but for starters I would disconnect the cable coming from your throttle, at the converter shift arm. You should then be able to move that arm back and forth, discerning neutral, forward and reverse. Once you are confident that you have identified the neutral position, then with your throttle/shifter lever in neutral, adjust the cable core so that it re-attaches to the shift converter arm with out any tension one way or the other.

The funny thing was I had to go past neutral to get out of reverse also. Then to get it in reverse I would have to try several times to get it to go.

It will go up and down with the toggle switch

I would still follow my advice above to check the integrity of the shift converter and at the same time check for any slop in your throttle/shifter mechanism.

Same still holds for the leg slipping. Maybe someone had the clutch pack out and apart and did not re-assemble it with enough tension. Also there should be no water in the box and you want to be sure to double gasket the cover.

There are a few OMC experts on this forum, so hopefully they will comment on the reverse lock-out issue.

The second issue . . speed maybe OK, but RPM should be a lot higher. I would see if you can validate the RPM with another piece of test equipment. If it proves out, I would check the boat for water retention, based on its age. that could be slowing you down and placing load on the engine.

I checked the out drive and I can push it up and down by hand pretty easily.

Ok I checked the shifting. I can get it into forward with no problem. It will not go into reverse at all.

There is no reverse lockout on an OMC stringer drive. It is all done in the tilt clutch pack.

I checked the out drive and I can push it up and down by hand pretty easily.

See above comment. So far I have seen no acknowledgement from you, Blujay, on anything that I have recommended??? DISCONNECT YOUR THROTTLE/ SHIFT CABLE FROM THE ARM ON YOUR SHIFT CONVERTER AND SEE IF YOU CAN USE THAT SAME ARM TO SHIFT THE OUTDRIVE INTO FORWARD, NEUTRAL AND REVERSE. IF YOU CAN, THEN YOU HAVE AN ISSUE OF EITHER A MIS-ADJUSTMENT ON YOUR THROTTLE/SHIFTER CABLE, OR YOU HAVE WEAR IN THAT SAME CONTROL. THERE ARE OTHER THINGS THAT COULD BE HAPPENING BUT THIS IS THE FIRST PLACE TO CHECK!

I will check it again but I could not get it to go into reverse with the cable disconnected. Your talking about the cable that moves the lever left to right on the shift plate correct?? Is there something special you have to do to get it to engage reverse. When we were on the water reversed worked a couple of times but the quit working.

Also I have not started working on the clutch plate problem yet. Thought I would try and figure out the shifting issue first.

... I have a feeling that you need to order a good shop manual. You can't (seriously) get much done on a Stringer without one.

As you are facing the shift converter box, the lever/arm on the face of it moves center (neutral) to left (reverse) or to right (forward).

The center position should be about in the middle of the scale decal that should be on the plate, behind/above the arm. Very roughly, the arm should move about 1" to the left or right of the center neutral position to engage reverse or forward. It is best to run this test with the motor idling.

Also, the arm will not necessarily be centered on the graph detail. It is only a rough guide. If you have your throttle shift cable disconnected and a gear does not engage within that approximate one inch swing of the converter lever, then there is something wrong inside the drive. One possible problem area, if someone had it apart, is that they did not properly time the the little wheel and shift rack that is at the other end of the shift cable. (on top of the lower gearbox).

I am not sure if there is ever any problem with stretched shift cables. I am sure that in their live span they could stretch a little but that should be accountable in the throttle/shift cable adjustment.

Ok I tried again. I could get it in reverse. But I had to move it a long way. The cables are very lose. Is there adjustment somewhere or can you cut them and put a new end on. image.jpg
