Here it is completed except for plugging holes in stern. Not a total redo but I wanted to keep some of the minor blemishes to give it some history. Launch is on the horizon.

Re: First time old boat owner ?s

The rubber trailer bushings finally arrived. Installed them yesterday with a bit of trouble but nothing I had to get help with. The rear end with the shackles was no problem but the front had to get the bushings trimmed a bit to fit and I had to use a crow bar and my ratchet tie down to pull the axle to align the holes. The previous work on them squashed them down quite a bit and I think led to their demise. I snugged them down to the point that the vibration proof nuts have some bolt coming out the end. The results are dramatic. There is a softness in the ride and a tightening up of the feel. If you have worn out bushings consider replacing them.

And I thought I would share some additions I made to the trailer. Had some leftover pop up tie downs (4) from a pick up I put a topper on. Have had them for 15 years and of course finally found a use for them. I made a wood mounting plate and lag screwed them around the frame with some aluminum box stock spacers.

Also made a wood step to get in and out. I do not like stepping on the fender, there are some stress cracks beginning to appear. It is a 1x12 fairly clear pine that runs across the frame. I was worried my bulk would break the wood so I tested it before, no problem. Sherwin Williams matched the Rustoleum gray paint with a no primer necessary porch paint. I mixed some sand in to make the non skid pad at the end. Worked out well, you can swing your leg into the boat with ease between the seats.

I bet it feels great to know your trailer bearings/entire trailer are sound.

I'm way jealous, but I've got to hand it to you, you've really kept at it and did an outstanding job. I'm sure you'll enjoy it with pride!

Well it's official. I am finished with my restore. Got the last 10 or so screws in the stern with 3M. Now what am I going to do, I'm not a fisherman and I don't want to go out everyday in the boat.

Oh yeah, there is this...

Only 800 miles away and just waiting for a new owner. $360 should get it. ;)

Or may be I will just concentrate on sprucing up the Jet for Lake Anna.

So you say you're looking to take a vacation to Western Colorado this summer? Have I got a deal for you! :D I will take ALL of your boredom away, and at the same time you can re-live the whole boat resto process from start to finish! I know, I know, "What a DEAL" your thinking, right?

Okay, maybe not, but your boat looks GREAT! I hope I do as well with mine!

Cheers, TS

Re: First time old boat owner ?s

Little update on my limited progress of the Starcraft Jet restore. Back to the motor mechanic (he did a major tuneup 2 weeks ago) after my first time in the water. Would start and idle and it sounded very good but when I put it in gear it stalled every time. If it is nice tomorrow I will take it out to see if his adjustment on timing fixed the problem. It ran fine in the tub.

Ordered two individual seats and one bench for the rear seating. Wanted red and white but had to settle on gray and red. The gray may set the color scheme for any hull work. Saw a refurbish using platinum silver and that was a knockout.

Replaced the only two bunkers (right term?) on my trailer, rest all rubber rollers. Spent a couple days doing it but I am retired. Probably a bit over the top with SS screws and finishing washers but I like the way they came out. Rolled the carpet edged under so fraying will not occur. Found some new commercial carpet in a dumpster. Had to split the old ones to get the bushings out.

Here are before and after pics.

Thanks Banana
YOu just solved one of my solvable problem, counter sink the bolts in the side kick panels on my boat trailer then tap, (stainless bolts in) then nut from fender side so boat never touches head of bolt Outstanding
Thanks A Million
By the way Very Nice Boat Thanks for sharing

Re: First time old boat owner ?s

You did a remarkable job with her. So many fine looking restorations around here it's a little intimidating. I hope I can maintain the standard.

Nothing beats the look of an old merc. So classic, I love it.

That is one awsome boat you have there. I am in the process of redoing my wifes little fish and ski and she wants the same bench seat you have but in blue/gray. I think I might talk her into the same front seats you have to match. I love those old closed bow runabouts and since its aluminium, its even better. Congrats!

Re: First time old boat owner ?s

Thanks everybody for the compliments. Still doing some fine tuning. Visited wrflalpacas last week and got some more ideas. His Ski Champ restore is among the best. Getting a small electronic tach like his that will fit perfectly on my new switch panel.

Lake Anna is coming up fast. Got to get to work.
