Probably a stupid question, but... :)

My girl caught a shark out in the the sf bay about a month ago, having a great time out off Paradise Dr. She pulled in a few small ones that I make her throw back, but then pulls in a nice 36 inch gray shark (don't know the type) We bleed it, ice it, and take it home where I gut it, chop it up and toss it in ziplock freezer bags. We pull it out tonight and the meet is cooked. It smells bad. It's also white and pulled apart like cooked fish.

What happened?

Freezer Burn?

When ever I store Fish, after cleaning, I would put fish in zip lock bags filled with water so when placed in freezer fish is frozen in a block of ice and no air will ruin the days catch.

Brine would work too.

Food dehydrates faster at lower temps, frozen bread stales faster too.

And you might want to check your freezer isn't overloaded.

Re: Fish cooked in freezer?

I've had other fish in the same freezer with no problems. I'll give the bag of water thing a try. I took another shark out that had been in there even longer and it was perfectly fine. This fridge was loaded VERY VERY full when this shark that went bad/cooked was put in there.

So, maybe it just didn't freeze right because of all of the other stuff in there??

My girl's fam had been visiting and there were about 50 tomales jammed in the freezer that are no longer there.

You had better figure out what type of shark your keeping. There are currently 19 species of shark that are federally protected species and they are starting to crack down hard on those in violation of the law.

And herein lays the problem when people don't fully understand the regulations. Sharks are for the most part are managed by the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Prohibited Species (no catches allowed, 19 species) Whale, basking, sand tiger, bigeye sand tiger, white, dusky, night, bignose, Galapagos, Caribbean reef, narrowtooth, longfin make, bigeye thresher, sevengill, sixgill, bigeye sixgill, Caribbean shapnose, smalltail, and Atlantic angel sharks

Yet others are managed by State as you noted. I have no idea what sharks you do or don?t have on the west Coast so I can?t comment specifically.

The bad news is that that shark you caught is a federally manage ground fish species. CA doesn?t have jurisdiction over this species.

The good news is that it's a Spiny Dogfish and you can keep them as a recreational angler. They are commercially out of bounds.

Re: Fish cooked in freezer?

Is there a book or something that I can buy that has all of the pictures of the sharks and other fish that people can and can't catch? I am about a year and a half into fishing, meaning I just started pretty much. I know not knowing something doesn't help your case, lol...but unless there is something with actual pictures of these sharks, there's not going to be much of a chance for me to know what type they are. Leopard sharks...sure, easy. Most others, I have no idea.

so....can I or can't I catch 6/7 gill sharks?

Did it taste or smell like ammonia? Sharks are known to be notorious for high levels of ammonia. Bleeding the shark was a good start. Some folks cut the gills out as well. I agree with the brine trick as well.

Good hint on the shark regulations. Be very careful to ID your species. Alot of different species look alike. Good fishing!

Looks like a grey reef shark. We dissected those in college. :p

EDIT: Just read the post above about the Spiny Dogfish, and I agree that this is what that looks like. Who can tell one squalus from the next these days...?

Could that be a Macco? the eyes and pointed nose are distinctive.

That is without a doubt a spiny dogfish. I've caught hundreds of them over the past 20 years.

Never ate one though...we usually toss em back or use them as bait in crab traps. Are they good eating?

Looks like it has two spines(points) If it is then I agree with trendsetter240, it's a dog fish. There are millions of them in the ocean. They have ruined our deep water striper fishery. There is a market for them in England.

if you can find the working link to the page, it would really be appreciated. We caught some more this last week. No idea what kind, but looked kinda like the last one. Turned out great. Shark on the right, eel on the left.
