Re: Fletcher Arrow

hi there, after doing a stack of research im going to use epoxy and youshould def do the same, all fiberglass companys say its stronger and bonds much better but more expensive. as it a transom you gotta do it properly and don use chopped strand matt either buy biax or a combo cloth but wih no CSM with epoxy!

Re: Fletcher Arrow

Thanks for the information. I have used epoxy for the transom and the deck back on the hull as it was, I now need to find out the best way to fix the bildge pump in, due to when I brought the boat it didn't have one. Any info or pictures of how other people have fixed theirs in would be of great help .

Many thanks Neil

Re: Fletcher Arrow

Neil, I fixed my pump to the bilge area floor with araldite.

You can see it here

I can un-clip it and remove it from the boat easily for servicing. I fitted an auto bilge switch too, as well as a manual over ride.

FYI i also fitted the battery are the rear to the side:

Re: Fletcher Arrow

I have the exact same boat as this, always wondered what year it was... didn't realise it was that old.

I had trouble finding windows for mine so resorted to building a small cuddy/cab on mine.

I'll get some pics sorted once i get my news windows in the cuddy

Re: Fletcher Arrow

I hear you can use noodles for foam.(pool noodles not the kind you eat)LOL
I also think you can use the pink stuff at Lowes or Home Depot.
Lets see what the experts say and I am NOT one of them.

Re: Fletcher Arrow

It's better to use the mixable expanding foam and not the HD stuff which is for installation application. You can purchase the foam at US Composite, West Boating, most any marine store. As far as in the UK, well..... you know what you have. Bottom line is that, if you what to do it right, use marine expandable foam.

Re: Fletcher Arrow

Source for two part foam in UK:

http://www.flints.co.uk/acatalog/Marine

They are a theatrical supply company but with Marine interests!
I bought some and it works OK.

However, ... Where I wanted to put foam, and thought I might want to remove it at some time in the future, I purchased 50mm and 100 thick sheets of polyurethane foam insulation (8' x 4' - I think) from a builders merchant, cut it to shape, layered/sandwiched it and pegged it in place. That might be a totally unsuitable suggestion for your circumstances, but for what its worth ...

Hope this helps,

O-G

Re: Fletcher Arrow

I have been offered some very dense thick plastic sheet that looks the same thickness as the transom would this be any good to put in instead of marine ply thanks again Neil

Also the fiberglass resin will not adhere to the plastic well.

Re: Fletcher Arrow

I can't really remember, but I think it expands 10/1 to 20/1. We used it in 2005.

Manufacturer is Scott Bader Co Ltd, Wellingborough, NN29 7RL 01933 663100, perhaps they can provide a spec. sheet.

If I am right, all your foam will be above the deck/floor. If you could cut and sandwich Kingspan/Xtratherm or similar polyurethane foam sheet to fit and wedge or strap it VERY FIRMLY in place, I would consider that instead.

Windshield. We made one out of Polycarbonate sheet, and heat moulded it (using old radiant electric bar fires), bending it over a former made of corrugated cardboard. It wasn't perfect, but good enough for our project. The main risk is that Polycarbonate is hygroscopic (absorbs water), and it need to be heated to a bit below 100C for a day or so before heating to over 100c for bending, otherwise lots of little bubbles will appear in the sheet. Piccy attached of finished article, bonded to the boat by a wide strip of old tyre inner tube and cyano.

Hope this helps,

O-G
