Sen. John Kerry on the fence . . .
By Boston Herald editorial staff
Saturday, May 20, 2006

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), fresh from the ongoing Senate debate over an immigration bill, offered the following explanation of his vote in favor of 370 miles of fence at the U.S.-Mexican border (estimated cost $3 million a mile) at yesterday’s New England Council breakfast:

“I voted for it because, first of all, a lot of it is the repair of the existing fence. A lot of it is just in the Arizona area, where we have the worst problem, the most numbers of people coming over.

“And if you go down, and you look at the numbers of border [patrol] people that we have right now, and even the numbers - I put in an amendment, which passed, and we raised the number up to about 3,000 [additional] that have to be trained and put out there. But even when we get there, we’re only going to have a couple of people or so per mile, which is simply not enough. So we’re way behind, in terms of the training and production of people. And in the short term, I think this can serve us well.

“If I were making the long-term decision, I’d announce, you know, hopefully it’s a temporary measure, and we can take it down as soon as we have enough people, and we’ve established a process where we’ve reduced the level.

“And I think that should be America’s goal, absolutely and positively. But in the temporary, we’ve got to have a comprehensive approach everywhere, and change forms of behavior everywhere. It begins with enforcement. Enforcement not just on the border, but enforcement against employers who are hiring people illegally, which is supposed to be illegal.”

That clarifies everything, now doesn’t it?

Who says this guy doesn’t have what it takes to make another run for president?

"we’re only going to have a couple of people or so per mile, which is simply not enough."
That's one person every 2640 feet....what the he#% does he want, a line of border patrol guys holding hands across the Arizona/Mexico border?
I think a couple of officers per mile ain't too bad. They're not on foot patrol out there. They can cover a mile pretty quick.
My nephew is in the border patrol in AZ. He's doing it as a way to get his foot in the door to an FBI job.

It makes perfect sense to me.There is no flip flop, which by the way, is just the spin from the people that brought us the war in Irak.
There are many ways of dealing with a problem.
problems are solved by using different methods during different stages of development.

How about a Kerry & W ticket. They may be more alike than many want to admit.

Would that be the one that voted to build the wall and wants to tear it down before it's even built? What's wrong with a permenent wall?

Kwas you are a very passionate musician. I like your music. may I have this dance? I'll lead, you follow. Just watch your footwork and everything will be all right. But first do the following.

How about get yourself a dictionary. Before you point finger, One must make sure he or she is perfect otherwise the unintended consequences maybe embarrassing.

Fair and balance. I report you decide. ;)

This is the correct spelling -----> GRAMMAR.

YOU'RE WELCOME!

I couldn't get way with that with my 10 year old. He'd say "Dad, I am serious, just tell me, yes or no."

If no one hired an illegal, no problem! If all illegals were given a fellony conviction before they were sent back all we would have to do is get a Mexican prison under contract to incarcerate them if they came back. Guess what, no problem.

Kwas the problem with building a wall is a waste of time and resources that maybe needed elsewhere.

Human beings are the most intelligent of all the animals in the animal kingdom (can we agree on this). You can build a wall, dig a river or lace the border with personnel land mines the outcome is the same. They ( illegals) will find a way to get here.

The solution is quite simple and not as complex as conventional wisdom make it out to be. The only obsticle maybe politicians are so deep inside the pocket of businesses that hire illegal immigrants it's impossible to pass anything into law in regard to the situation. My answer is to fine any company that hires undocumented workers.

Let me remind you this is not a liberal vs. Conservative problem like you make it out to be. It is a problem for the working citizens of this country to come together and speak with one voice. Enough is enough. At some point you have to take care of you and yours before you take care of others.
