Float Adjustment - No springs - All plastic - how can I adjust this?

I'm rebuilding my first carb. Everything was going very smoothly until I tried to put the new float on.

First the pin that goes through the float and is held down by a screw didn't fit. I had to use a hammer to get it through! Then, of course when I tightened the screw the float would not move at all. I took the float out again and very carefully made the pin channel a little wider until the float moved freely when installed. - Is this correct?

My second issue now with it moving freely, it's not set correctly and even with the bowl bottom. My issue is it's all plastic and nothing to adjust? Any ideas on what I am missing. I attached a diagram of the carb with arrows- there doesn't seem to be a sping associated with this model.

Thanks in advance

bumrunner;

Going by your previous posts, I am presuming that the engine we are talking about is your 9.9 Bigfoot. If so, it comes up as:

9,9 9.9 2-cyl 0G960500 0T178499 2000 USA

From here:

http://www.marinshopen.se/Motorer/O...ista/Merc2takt2cyl9815/tabid/482/Default.aspx

It is a model number 1F10351WD

Parts Listing:

Service Manual:

Do you know the p/n of the pin you used?

Thanks Gerry, That is great help. Unfortunately I do not know the p/n number. It was a kit I got from West Marine. After looking at this diagram I'm still confused on the following.

After I install the float - Should it move freely up and down or should it stay exactly level as shown in the diagram? If it moves freely, or any movement at all, how do I actually adjust it to level (or to the specs shown in the manual) as it is all plastic and nothing to really control the height?

Hammers are not recommended carb adjustment tools. :eek:

hammer = oil
carb = water

they don't mix.

Yes the float should move freely when the pin is inserted.

When fuel enters the carb it raises the float to it's highest position and that is what you are trying to test for. You turn the carb upside down as the picture in the manual shows. As you look at the picture the carb bowl fits where the small square is, ie; the carb is upside down.

Clear as mud???
